JO goes Public – Public Art that is…

JO FineArts is pleased to anounce that JO students will be working with Artist Renée Van Halm, to paint the facade of the VPL on Fraser street!

Vancouver-based artist Renee Van Halm was commissioned by the South Hill (Fraser Street) Business Association to develop designs for a new set of banners and a related wall mural for the South Hill branch of the Vancouver Public Library. Working with layers of pattern in reference to the diverse cultures that make up this south Vancouver neighbourhood, her art projects enlist the support of a variety of community members from local residents to John Oliver Secondary students. The artist-designed banners will be installed along Fraser Street between 41st and 50th Avenues in late May, in time for South Hill’s 100th Anniversary celebration and the South Hill Festival. The library mural will be in-process during the Festival and final completion is scheduled for mid-June.

Renée Van Halm is currently Interim Dean of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design and was for many years an Associate Professor in the University’s Faculty of Visual Art and Material Practice. Her artwork is informed by the history of art, design and architecture and includes painting, drawing and installation projects. Her work has been shown locally, nationally and internationally and has been featured in over 30 solo exhibitions and selected for numerous group exhibitions. Among other cultural institutions, her artwork is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

The South Hill Public Art Plan was commissioned by the South Hill (Fraser Street) Business Association. It offers a framework for a changing and evolving series of public art projects that are inspired by and reflect upon those things that make South Hill unique.

Thes are the banners that Renée has designd and will be going up all over Fraser Street over the next month!
