This term I would like you to start the process of understanding, and evaluating, several photographic images. To do this, I would like you to precede through the following steps, making notes, sketches along the way.
*Please note that I’m looking for you to make a personal response based on your own experience, prior knowledge, and/or research.
Connecting:
- The purpose of making a connection to the photo is to enhance our understanding of the photographer’s intent.
- Use your own knowledge and experience’s to find meaning.
- “Deep thinking connections help you understand the Photo better. Quick connections don’t”
Questioning:
- “A deep-thinking question helps you to think deeper about the text.”
- The Photo looks like it’s about But now I’m wondering if it’s actually about _________________.
Visualizing:
- “Visualizing is like seeing a movie in your mind while you read” In this case ‘reading’ the photo.
- Look at the photo for a while. Now close your eyes- what happened before? What happens after?
Inferring:
- Most Photographers don’t tell you EVERYTHING about what their intent was for work- they want YOU to figure it out for yourself
- Don’t just think about what IS in the photo, thinking about what ISN’T.
- Inferring is filling in, in your head what is not written under, or beside, the photo
- When you infer, you need to act like a detective. Look for the clues the photographer left in the image and use them to figure out what they didn’t tell you.
Transforming:
- “Transforming is when your thinking gets re-arranged and re-organized because of something you read. You may end up with the same thought, only now it looks a little different”
- “Summarizing is two dimensional reading, synthesizing is three dimensional reading”
- “A summary is a re-tell; a synthesis is a re-think”.
