Finish part IV of the case study. Begin reading chapter 13 on evolution.

Summarize the antibiotic-resistance-articles and prepare a short presentation to explain the main ideas to the class.

Work on parts 3 and 4 of the case study (An Infectious Cure). Begin reading of the section on Evolution in the textbook.

Finish parts 1 and 2 of the case study “An Infectious Cure.”

Look up and be sure you understand the terms: evolution, natural selection, fitness (as it relates to evolution) and adaptation. Finish all 3 articles on viruses and be prepared to discuss their contents.  Be sure that you have understood the chapter on viruses and bacteria (17).

Work on the “Between the living and the dead” virus questions, as assigned in class (use the same number questions as your presentation (1-8), and also do questions 9 and 10). Be prepared to share with your group when you arrive in class, and then with the whole class (jigsaw activity). Please return the case study handout next class, so that I can re-use them. Thank you. Be sure you have read 17-1 (viruses) and 17-2 (bacteria) in the text.

Please ensure that you are able to answer all the questions from today’s case study on viruses/bacteriophages:

1. What are some of the differences between a bacteriophage and a bacterium?
2. Why do most viruses that infect bacteria have tails, whereas most viruses that infect animals and plants do not?
3. What is the “life” cycle of a T-even bacteriophage?
4. What is the function of a virion?
5. Describe the structure of a T-even bacteriophage.
6. Could bacteriophage be used to combat bacterial diseases?
7. What type of energy is required for new bacteriophages to be assembled?
8. How many tailed bacteriophages are there, and where are they located?
9. Why are viruses not classified as living? 1
10. Are bacteriophages harmful to people?

Read section 17-1 (viruses ) and 17-2 (prokaryotes) in textbook.

In groups of 2 or 3, answer the following questions:

1. List the shapes of bacterial cells and provide a diagram.
2. List the arrangements of bacterial cells and provide a diagram.
3. What other characteristics of bacteria are used to identify them?

Essential questions we are considering at this time:

1. what are the characteristics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
2. how did eukaryotic cells evolve?

Bacterial disease research – For your assigned bacterial disease, research:

1. bacterial that causes the disease
2. transmission of the disease (how it is caught or passed between people, how it spreads)
3. symptoms of the disease
4. treatment
5. include a diagram of the bacteria (type, arrangement, other identifying features; eg. are they gram positive or gram negative) or other important features of the illness
6. include references on back of poster
7. poster should be colourful, visually appealing, neat, include labelled diagram(s) and point form information

You will have 20 minutes at the start of next period for any last minute poster preparations, then you will be called upon to give a brief (1 minute) presentation on the bacterial disease.
