Biology 11 2-2 and 2-4 12 Oct 2017 and 1-1 13 Oct 2017

Study for the test (Monday, 16 Oct for blocks 2-2 and 2-4 and Tuesday 17 Oct for Block 1-1): Chapters 1-5, 7, 8 (8-2), Safety, scientific method, notes, case studies, videos, etc.

Biology 11 1-1 6 Oct 2017

First test will take place for Biology on 16/17 October (depending on the block).

Be sure you have done all the readings, review sheets, reviewed the notes, watched the videos, etc.

Finish the first page only of the handout entitled “Microscope questions and review for chapter test,” but read the remainder of the handout (both sides).

Attempt the crossword, as you probably can answer at least some of the clues at this point. We will learn more about microscopes in the upcoming classes. Label the second microscope diagram, as extra practice.

Please read this case study, parts I and II, and answer the question. Bring to class next time to discuss.

Biology 2-2 and 2-4 10 Oct 2017

Read part III of the case study on organic molecules, “Spark of Life.” Complete the questions on a separate sheet and bring to class.

Study for the test (Monday, 16 Oct):

Chapters 1-5, 7, 8 (8-2), Safety, scientific method, notes, case studies, videos, etc.

Biology 11 2-4 29 Sep 2017

Work on the meiosis review sheet (to the best of your ability, using textbook pages 164+). This fill in the blanks page and link may be helpful.

Be sure you have studied the organelle diseases syndromes covered in class. You do not need to memorize each one, but please know the general problems that can occur when organelles are not functioning properly, and what organelles can typically go wrong.

Review the DNA structure handout (sections A-D) that we completed in class today.

Answer the following questions on DNA/mRNA:

Write the complementary strand for the following sequences:

  1. TTC ATG GCC CAT AUG (DNA)

__________________________ (mRNA)

___________________________ (amino acid sequence) (see chart on p. 149)

2. UAA AGU CUC AA CUA (mRNA)

__________________________ (DNA)

___________________________ (amino acid sequence)

Watch the videos suggested earlier, if you haven’t done so already:

Transcription and Translation: Bozeman Science (12 mins)

DNA and RNA: Bozeman Science part 1 (12 mins)

DNA and RNA: Bozeman Science part 2 (10 mins)

What is DNA?: Bozeman Science (10 mins)

Nature of science, Bozeman Science (8 minutes)

Mitosis and Meiosis, Bozeman Science (13:40 minutes)

How to use a microscope (26 minutes)

Water: A polar molecule, Bozeman Science  (8:40 mins)

Crash Course: Water – Liquid Awesome (11:20 mins)

Mock quiz next Tuesday (not for marks).

Biology 11 1-1 28 Sep 2017

Work on the DNA Structure handout (A-D) using chapter 7. Complete as much as you can, and we will go over in class.

Review the notes you gathered from our colleagues in the other class on organelle syndromes/diseases. The list of syndromes is below. You do not need to memorize all the information, but have a broad understanding of the material. Look up any missing information (Leigh syndrome, etc).

1.Pompe’s disease,

2.Tay-Sachs disease,

3.Diabetes mellitus and deafness,

4.Leber’s disease,

5.Leigh syndrome,

6.Achondrogenesis,

7.Cystic fibrosis,

8.Adronoleukodystrophy,

9.ribosomopathies,

10.Osteogenesis imperfecta,

11.Emery Dreifuss syndrome,

12.Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome,

13.Zellweger sydrome

Answer the questions on DNA/mRNA given on the overhead. They were:

Write the complementary strand for the following sequences:

  1. TTC ATG GCC CAT AUG (DNA)

__________________________ (mRNA)

___________________________ (amino acid sequence) (see chart on p. 149)

2. UAA AGU CUC AA CUA (mRNA)

__________________________ (DNA)

___________________________ (amino acid sequence)

Be sure to finish the science handout and bring to me on Friday, if you haven’t handed it in yet. Thank you.

Watch the suggested videos. These will help you with the material and the information in them is testable.
