ALL COURSES – UPDATE APRIL 27

Weekly check-in (“attendance”) – reminder to reply via email by Thursday, attendance will be entered into MyEd at the end of each week.

All courses – your next due dates for what is listed below is May 4 (soft deadline)/May 8 (hard deadline); this set up regarding deadlines is meant to provide you with flexibility according to your individual circumstances but be careful about procrastination.  It is recommended by many to try and have a somewhat regular schedule regarding your routines, and to make sure that you have regular breaks from your online/screen time.  As per these online assignments, the format you choose to submit is up to you depending on your preferences and abilities (what you are capable of but also interesting and fun hopefully), but please make sure that your work is your own work (if incorporating work from other sources as support this should be noted/cited) and to check that your submission has been actually loaded as some student submissions for previous work remains blank.  Post your finished work in BOTH your DIGITAL PORTFOLIO and in TEAMS.

Assessment – as per direction from the District and Ministry, course work during this time of online learning as continuity of your educational programs serves as an opportunity to further enhance and raise your learning outcomes; students are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to enhance your course standing in working towards your final course marks.  Regular engagement (attendance check-ins combined with submission of work) will only result in a greater standing and overall improved final course mark.

Any questions or issues (assignment-related or not), please contact me; be well and stay safe!

PEPS12 – Start with MOODLE and review material on Ideologies, specifically political ideologies (Conservatism, Liberalism, Socialism, Communism, Fascism); conduct further research online as needed.

    • How have governments shown their ideological perspectives in their handling of the current global health crisis?  Choose TWO examples where there are differences.
    • Include in your presentation of your work the following:
      • location
      • sufficient detail showing the connection between the government action and the ideological perspective
      • result of the government action
    • List of online sources for your research

GEO12 – There is growing evidence that as human populations deal with the current global health crisis that the physical earth seems to be recovering to varying degrees from the damage wrought on it; research and present FOUR examples around the world where this has occurred.  Your submission should include:

    • The location of the phenomenon (this must include a map visual of some kind as well as the absolute and relative location)
    • A “before” and “after” (text and visual)
    • Your brief conclusion on how ONE of these examples of recovery can be sustained/continued even after the global health crisis is resolved
    • List of online sources for your research

LEAD10 – Go to MOODLE and read the Globe and Mail article on Dr. Bonnie Henry.  Examine her leadership during this health crisis and present your thoughts, including on the following:

    • What do you perceive as her strengths?
    • Identify some of the challenges she faced in dealing with this crisis.
    • In your opinion, how effective would you describe her leadership approach to the current crisis?

SS10M – Go to MOODLE and explore “Unit 2 – HISTORY – POST WWII – A NEW INTERNATIONAL ROLE”.  Canada has chosen to adopt a certain role in international affairs and how it interacts with other nations.

    • Explore the links on the UN & Canada as well as read PDF of Counterpoints Chapter 6
      • What was the international role that Canada adopted in the immediate post WWII world (1945-1990s)?
      • Is this evident in today’s current crisis?  Provide supporting details/examples
      • What factors do you think contribute to Canada continuing to play this role?

SS8M – Go to MOODLE Topic 5; Read the PDF on CROSSROADS Chapter 1

    • Compare the western European view of the world in the areas of trade, science and technology back then (circa late 1400s to the 1500s), with how our global view of the world is today in our modern times in those same three areas.   Your current descriptions should include our general 21st Century perspective, as well as your thoughts/opinions on how the current global health crisis may alter that in the near future.  Your comparison must include (but can be more than) the following areas:
      • Trade and Economics
      • Science
      • Technology and Innovation

    ALL COURSES/UPDATE APRIL 20

    All Courses:

Reminder to check your emails regularly (please make sure that the school has your correct email in the MyEd system) and to reply to teachers’ regular check-ins as soon as you can (reasonably this should be within a day or so of receiving the teacher communication) as this will be considered a way to gauge engagement/attendance.

April 20 (today) is the target due date to have started your Observations/Records of these times in your Digital Portfolio.
    –  your Digital Portfolio link should be uploaded in TEAMS
    –  a separate section/page/tab should be visible in your Digital Portfolio dedicated to your Observations
    –  there should be at least one set of observations recorded
    –  this is an ongoing assignment where you should be making additions on a regular (ie. weekly, daily, every other day, etc.) basis – the frequency will vary depending on each individual but the expectation is that it is an ongoing and expanding set of your thoughts and observations during these times.

NEXT “assignments” and “due date” (in addition to your ongoing work with your Digital Portfolios):

PEPS12 – see the MOODLE “Economics” section Minimum Wage vs Living Wage vs Universal Basic Income for your assignment –  look at this assignment with special regards to what is happening currently.  The format of your work that you will submit is entirely up to you.

GEO12 – create a REDESIGN of what you think a city (use Vancouver as your example if you prefer) will have to consider especially in terms of physical elements; this could include topics like size of walkways, design of buildings and amenities, schooling, transportation infrastructure, basic necessities and access, etc.  The format of your work is up to you (note form, slides, paragraphs, video, infographic, etc.)

SS10M – create a Digital SCRAPBOOK (drawings, photos, writings, etc.) that shows a “Day in the Life” as a Canadian/Vancouverite that compares our current times with the times of a past global historical event of the 20th Century (WWI, Great Depression, WWII, Cold War, etc.); your format must include multi-modal (combination of visual and written) and be in the first-person narrative.  Final submission must be a digital file so that you can upload it (hard copies/drawings/writings can be scanned/photographed and then compiled digitally into one file).

SS8M – create a digital comparison of an innovation or invention that you think will be adopted on a regular basis in our lives as a result of our current times with an innovation/invention of one of the past eras that we have studied in our course.   Your comparison should be in the same field ie. architecture, medicine, technology, transportation, etc.   Your submission should include the reasons why these innovations/inventions were/are necessary.

LEAD10 – create a digital display of an example of a community venture that has helped others during these challenging times.  Your format  should be in note form and should include a visual component if possible, and can be an infographic, slideshow, etc. of your choice.

DUE DATES for the above:  April 27 (soft deadline) to May 1

SUBMISSIONS need to be in your Digital Portfolio and in TEAMS

    ALL COURSES

To clarify instructions on how to submit – when you check-in on TEAMS, all you need to do is post the link to your Digital Portfolio in the specific assignment that is dated; when I click onto your portfolio I should see your ongoing observations.  Please do your best to have things up-to-date; your first “due date” is April 20, so in TEAMS I should see for the April 20 “Assignment” the link to your Portfolio, and when I go to your actual portfolio I should see all your observations up to that date.

    UPDATE APRIL 14

All Students – please remember that your assignment for me right now is an ongoing record of your observations; so take note of things or questions that arise on a weekly basis.

Also, all your teachers will be checking in (think “attendance”) with you also on a weekly basis so it is important for you to reply to those emails!

Contact me if you have any questions –

    Stay safe and stay healthy,

    ALL COURSES

All Courses:  here is a sample set of records/observations from my own personal running around today – it is simply recorded in point form and stream-of-consciousness type format but you may choose to be more elaborate if you wish ( some of you have already uploaded/submitted some great stuff already!):

    APRIL 11 Entry

    • Allergies running wild today so grabbed my mask to wear when going into businesses (see pic lol)
    • Most people are respecting the physical distancing in public places (Cambie and Broadway area)
    • Pretty much every grocery store has an extensive line up outside to get in; many stores are limiting the numbers of people allowed to go inside; as well, many have instituted “one-way” aisles to create a flow of foot traffic. How many of these these measures will be continued afterwards?
    • My sunglasses start fogging up as I continue wearing the face mask – did not anticipate that coming lol
    • Roughly 75% of people I saw wore masks
    • Noticing the social distancing around me, sometimes I feel like a superhero with a protective force field around me, while at other times I’m wondering if it’s my breath lol
    • Essential workers are traditionally thought of as doctors, nurses, first responders etc; how many of us realized how important people working at grocery stores are?  After all this, will workers like grocery store workers be paid like they are essential?
    • Homelessness as an issue is exacerbated during these times; how do we address this?
    • Despite all the human issues and struggles, nature continues to move according to its own schedule ( see pics below)
    • Just found out via social media of a loss in the family; can only imagine the immediate family dealing with this and their heart break at not being able to deal with this in our normal way
    • I have never sneezed so self-consciously before in my life; also, sneezing into crook of elbow is just a form of dabbing
    • … to be continued in next set of observations to come …

UPDATE – ALL COURSES APRIL 9

Students will also be receiving communications though Microsoft TEAMS “classes” that have been set up for GEO12, PEPS12, SS10M, LEAD10, & SS8M as per VSB & school admin directives; remember that MOODLE has been set up with specific course resources that will assist students in their respective courses.

    Upcoming course schedule date(s):

April 20 – In each student Digital Portfolio there should be a separate section (page/tab/etc)  dedicated to the “Spring 2020 Observations”  assignment described in an earlier post (see previous post from April 1, 2020)

Some focusing ideas students can use are listed below (these are not meant to limit your topics, but rather give you a common starting point):

PEPS12 – The economic welfare of individuals is an issue many governments are wrestling with in addition to the health concerns – examine the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI) in light of the current situation (especially with regard to any countries that may be implementing a form of UBI) and share your thoughts/opinions, versus Guaranteed Minimum Wage.  *You can also explore the concept of a “Living Wage”

GEO12 – Cities are often designed with social interaction in mind; describe some possible ways where cities might be designed differently as a result of the current situation.

SS10M – The current situation has sometimes been described as similar to war times – provide some examples that support this, and some examples that refute this.

LEAD10 – It can be argued that a crisis is an opportunity for leaders to come forward; share some specific examples where this has been shown (can be local community grassroots, governmental, organizational or individual)

SS8M – What new ways of doing things (methods/ innovations/inventions/ideas) have emerged as a result of the current situation?  Share your examples with as much detail as possible (who/what/why/where/when/how).

Students are also free to use ideas from across all the courses listed or come up with their own based on running observations!

    UPDATE: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO STUDENTS/PARENTS

    APRIL 8 – MESSAGE to STUDENTS/PARENTS

    ALL COURSES: Please read …

All students:  Please read the following piece by writer/teacher George Saunders and his letter to his students that was published in The New Yorker today about the importance of your observations as part of this generation’s record of the times … (you may include an optional response to this in your digital portfolio if you wish – yes, totally your choice!) – hopefully this will give you even more motivationa (if you didn’t already have it!) to record your observations and questions down as we navigate our way through these times …

A Letter to My Students as We Face the Pandemic _ The New Yorker

The New Yorker April 13, 2020 | The New Yorker

Bonus from Twitter & Mark Cuban:

    Mark Cuban
    @mcuban
When we look back in five years, we are going to realize that there were 10 to 20 amazing companies that were started that changed the world and led us to a brighter future. Ask yourself: “Why Not Me” or “Why Not Us”. Now is your time. The world is waiting.

    UPDATE

I hope this finds everyone as well as can be under these unprecedented circumstances.

There is no doubt that we are all witnessing historic events unfold before us, so the number one priority is the health and well-being of you and those around you.

With that in mind, this is also an opportune time to be an active witness to what is happening around us, so if you are able to, record your thoughts, observations and questions about what is going on as we navigate through this.  There are many profound opportunities for us to leave an impact in the midst of so much uncertainty through our observations and records.  Below are just some suggested ways to help organize your thoughts according to our course subject areas, but by no means are they meant to confine, constrict or limit (ANY thoughts/questions are encouraged!) – you may organize your thoughts however you wish (a suggested way would be to categorize according to “Observations”, “Questions”, “Ideas”, etc.)!  At some point these thoughts should be uploaded to your course portfolios, but for now just simply record your thoughts as they may occur.  Try to cite the sources of your examples as not all your examples might be universally known.

LEAD10 – how have various figures shown effective leadership during this time?  Examples could range from a personal level to local community example to government leaders (Theresa Tam, Bonnie Henry, Chrystia Freeland, Adrian Dix, etc.)

PEPS12 – what have been some economic concerns (individually, locally, nationally)?  Issues?  Possible solutions?  how have different political systems around the world reacted to the crisis situation?  what role does the dissemination of information play, and are there pros and cons?

GEO12 – what factors (physical geography, human geography) have contributed to the spread?  what factors have mitigated?  what factors have worsened?  How has the physical earth been affected?  how has the movement of people, goods, ideas been affected?  What other natural disasters/events have occurred?  What are the problems with food security, and what are some possible solutions (now?  future?)

SS10M –  how has Canada responded via the different levels of government?  what regional (provincial/territorial) differences have you noticed?  what are advantages/disadvantages?

SS8M – how have recent events made us re-think how we do things?  What possibilities might emerge?

Further updates and information will be provided; the school will be issuing formal communications via your emails so check your emails regularly; if you have questions do not hesitate to contact me.

    Stay well,

    PLEE
