While the evaluation was a foot…some thoughts

Many words in biology are words created from latin origins.

Terms like “bio” and “di” are sometimes great building blocks to understand grander words like..bioaccumulation…

Bio is life and to accumulate is to do what?

Lets discover some examples..

Topic

Number Two

Consider the following metaphor

Lets think of stuff that should not be in your room..say a plate or dish. If I asked each of you what was in your room it may be a small amount. If we added all of the rooms together what happens to the amount of plates? If we did a survey of several high school student’s rooms what would happen to the number of plates?

On the back of your 2.3 sheet try to construct both a food pyramid and a food web.

Answers to your worksheet are found by viewing

2.3 Bioaccumulation Powerpoint at the following site.

A news source says

the fashion industry is the dirtiest industry on the planet”.

Your mission:

Find evidence to support or debate the statement.

Remember to write down the source of the information.

Is the source popular news, academic or political?

Try and find some sources that include some numbers.

After a broad level google search

Cite three sites to argue for the statement

Cite three against.

Once you have your data

A)   Can you please create a flow chart to show how the fashion industry pollutes water.

B)   Can you offer some practical solutions both in your own life and community?

C)  Is there a word to describe accumulation of pollution due to multiuse of a resource like water? Can you invent one.

D)  Put (A-C) onto a legal size piece of paper to be used as a poster.

Bio 12 Neuron Notes

Bio 12: Studying for Nervous system

We have been using the following path of inquiry to learn about systems.

  • Learn about the “bits”
  • Learn how the “bits” work or interact.
  • What happens if the “bits” or the process does not work.

So far we have studied :

Four systems

  • Digestive
  • Circulatory

the plumbing

the blood

  • Repiratory
  • Renal or Excretory System

By using the idea of the body as a machine or an automobile

Then we can see that these systems deal with :

  • How does the body get fuel?
  • How does the body move that fuel?
  • How do we burn the fuel?
  • How do we get ride of waste

The Challenge is how does the body coordinate sense:

  1. What is going on outside of the body
  2. Keep balance within the body
  3. Coordinate a response to what is going on outside of the body.

So the Nervous system has cells to quickly send messages via electrochemical messages.

Here are some challenges

  • How do the cells receive a message
  • How do the cells send the message
  • How do three types of cells work together to respond to a stimulus.

So..the bits

The nervous system can be divided into a peripheral system and a central system.

There are three types of nervous systems cells

  1. Cells that can receive a message: Sensory
  2. Cells that can transfer the message: Interneurons
  3. Cells that can respond to interneuron message: motor

We can look at anatomical feature of these three cells to classify them.

So..

  1. Which have myelin?
  2. Which have a large central cell body?
  3. Which has long dendrites?
  4. Which has long axons?

To coordinate we can look at the “reflex arc” which coordinates all three cells to a quick response without any processing to the brain…

The thought “Ouch I stepped on a nail” follows the quick hop away from the nail.

A sensory receptor is any cell that can responds to a stimulus and send an electrochemical message to another nerve cell. A sensation may cause either an autonomic or somatic response.

What is somatic and autonic?

Can you coordinate the path of response or does it happen without thinking?

The path of our lessons.

  1. We started off with an outline of notes.
  2. We had a power point to look at the basics of neuron structures and functions.
  3. We started off understanding sending a message from one cell to another.
  4. We looked at the transformation of an electrochemical message to a chemical message that changes the permeability of a cell membrane.
  5. We made a diagram to show how a graph shows a change in voltage within a cell.

For our first evaluation we are going to look at this journey.

When looking at your notes, focus on neurons, synapses, action potential and peripheral nervous system notes information

https://www.google.ca/#safe=strict&q=When+looking+at+your+notes%2C+focus+on+neurons%2C+synapses%2Caction+potential+and+peripheral+nervous+system+notes+information

Now ..looking at all these sites, which focus on the peripheral nervous system?

What can you find that is useful with this site?

http://www.kean.edu/~jfasick/docs/Fall_08_AP_1/Chapter%2011_Part%20I.pdf

From a large volume of information can you refine your search into smaller pieces and then put them into order?

The big picture

http://www.ptdirect.com/training-design/anatomy-and-physiology/the-nervous-system-2013-anatomy-and-function

http://www.emory.edu/ANATOMY/AnatomyManual/nervous_system.html

The individual pieces of the picture

Synapse

https://web.williams.edu/imput/introduction_main.html

Action potential

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_potential

Peripheral

https://www.dartmouth.edu/~rswenson/NeuroSci/chapter_3.html

Now seek questions or exams about these pieces.

Do these questions focus on the right topics?

http://wps.pearsoned.co.uk/ema_uk_he_PX_biopsych/216/55486/14204563.cw/content/index.html

What about these?

http://highered.mheducation.com/sites/0072421975/student_view0/chapter17/multiple_choice_quiz.html

Now ..you can use your action potential sheet as a foundation for a study guide.

What things do you want to have?

You challenge is to answer higher level questions that include the word …why.

So try a few more questions to see how thorough your study guide is.

Make Three Columns on your sheet

In each column make a circle and divide that circle into three pie slices. Each slice should represent air, earth and water.

Now

Each circle should represent a nutrient cycle. Carbon,Nitrogen and Potasium.

You are to label how the nutrient moves around the circle or if it skips a wedge of your circle. You should include: processes and also formulas for processes. You should show relationship between living and non-living things. You should show where most of the nutrient is stored.

Side Two

You should construct a table to compare, Carbon,Nitrogen and Potasium

Compare

Similarity between the three nutrients

Constract and show differences between each nutrient.

A learned response to first fyear med discussion board..

The sodium potassium pump maintains the resting membrane potential (which is polarized, i.e. negative with respect to the outside). The definition of “hyperpolarization” is “even more polarized (i.e. more negative) than RMP”… thus an action potential is depolarization, repolarization, hyperpolarization, then after-hyperpolarization (as the K channels inactivate). I know what you’re basically trying to say (which isn’t what the original guy asked, I think), but you’re using the wrong terminology… hyperpolarization (if you can even call that a state) is transient, the dip under the resting membrane potential after an action potential. Wow, too many parentheses.

Key points

Each step of energy transformation will lose a portion of the original energy.

The further you move up the food chain, the more energy you need.

Respiration, the burning of sugar, requires oxygen and sugar and gives off water and carbondioxide.

Switching to being warm blooded means you need more energy.
