  1. Character Pkg– 3 metaphors sheets: Metaphors, Lovely Lines & Making Metaphors – Be creative!
  2. Notebook: p. 18 –  Geraldine Moore Character Paragraph: take your outline and write 1 paragraph with your own title, double-spaced & in pen.
  3. Great Canadian Mail Race – use the template to write a rough copy of your letter  ===> Letter Template. You will be writing your letter at the start of class instead of silent reading.  So please have ideas of what you’re going to write so you can finish writing it in that 15-20 mins.

  2. Detailed outline – this is your INDIVIDUAL outline for the debate topic.  Your intros & conclusions should all be different.  Your points & evidence MAY be similar, but not EXACTLY the same because you are completing this outline on your own, using your knowledge and skills.  
  3. Story maps x 2 – “Just Lather…” and “The Lady, or the Tiger?”
  4.   3. Poetry sheets – create flashcards for the first 6 terms under the heading “Sound Devices“.  Try to write the definition in your own words and add an example with the definition to help you better understand and remember each term.
  4. Find Kahoots to help us review any of the lesson in LP Unit #2.

  1. Character Package – “A Dream” – lyrics & Qs AND Creating Imagery worksheet. Here’s a link to the video for the song ===> “A Dream” by Will.I.Am & Common AND a link to video of  Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech ===>“I Have A Dream” speech – go to 12:20 mins for the I have a dream part.
  2. Notebook: p. 17Essay Outline: choose the 3 best & most important traits for Geraldine.  Put them in order – good, better, best point.  Fill in the 3 columns: Topic Sentence#1, #2, #3 should all be complete sentences.  Ex. Geraldine is very mature for her age or Another important trait is… etc.   The Supporting Details can be in note form UNLESS you’re using a quote from the story.  These details are your EVIDENCE of the trait.

ENGLISH 10 – 1.1/1.2

HOMEWORK: Due Tuesday

  1. Journal #9 – Nationality/Geography & Identity: Discuss how where you’ve grown up has influenced your personal identity.  Consider your neighbourhood, city, province, country, etc.  How have these contributed to how you see yourself, how you act, what you have, what you know/skills you have, what you have experienced, who you are.  For example, we live in a city that is very diverse and natural.  Because of the diversity you have likely been exposed to a variety of cultures, languages, religions, etc.  Because of the natural environment, you’ve likely seen a variety of animals: skunks, coyotes, eagles, herons, raccoons, maybe even bears or cougars.  It is not uncommon to see an eagle flying overhead or to hear an news report of a bear going through people’s garbage.  How do you think these facts have influenced your identity.
  2. The Stranger” Qs, Lit Circle
  3. Project – get working on the good copy journals.  You need to select 5 different influences on your identity and then explain and discuss each.
  4. Project– start on your good copies!  Start on your final – 5th – project assignment that’s all your choice.

  2. Debate: Coward or Hero? – This will be your last opportunity to meet and discuss with your team & group, so come prepared with all of your notes & info.
  3. Many students have been ABSENT.  Some have come to see me to take the reading quiz and to find out what they were going to miss, several have not.  Whether you were in Leadership, or a Student-Athlete, or just sick, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to keep up with what you’re missing.  You need to come see me MONDAY morning, before class, to discuss what you have already completed and when you’re going to complete whatever you’ve missed.  YOU need to come with A PLAN.  I should not be expected to come up with solutions for you.  This will be your ONLY opportunity to salvage what you have missed.

  2. Great Canadian Mail Race – find a Canadian School that has gr. 8, get the name, and address.
  3. Notebook: p. 14 – Geraldine Moore “STEAL”; p. 15 – Brainstorm a list of traits that describe Geraldine; p. 16 Outline: Traits & Evidence – Look at all of your ideas and information about Geraldine & choose 5 important & varied TRAITS AND provide EVIDENCE from the story for each trait.

  1. LP #24-28 – focus on sentences
  2. Journal #54th draft – revise & rewrite considering EVERYTHING – use the sheets at the end of your notebook: transitions, editing, writing rubric.  Essay structure, sentence variety, language & word choice, and, of course, IDEAS! 
  3. Here’s the Ted Talk we started watching in class.  Consider our ability to think critically if so much of media and our information gathering is controlled by big corporations or just others.   1. Through the Tunnel” – Lit Circle Role Sheet & Qs (from last class)
  2. The Stranger” – read, highlight, Qs, AND watch the video ===> “The Stranger” Video AND   “The Secret Path” in Schools AND Gord Downie, the Wenjak Sisters, and PM Trudeau at We Day ===> The Secret Path — Full movie ends at 46 mins & then there’s an interview & discussion.
  3. Journal # 8 – Experience & Challenges & Identity – Discuss a specific experience or challenge that impacted your personal identity.  If you don’t have enough to discuss for 1 experience/challenge, then discuss 2.  Make you you explain HOW it impacted your identity.
  4. Identity Project – In-class time Dec. 14 & 18th. Make sure you bring stuff to work on.  Project will be due Dec. 20th.
