ENGLISH 9 – 2.1

HOMEWORK: Due Thurs

  1. CANNED FOOD DRIVE! It’s our last chance to HELP OTHERS and WIN the COMPETITION! Here’s the link for your friends/family to donate online – – click here ===> Vancouver Food Bank Online Donation! Remember, they need to indicate that it’s to John Oliver School & to our class. The link will open to our Food Drive page.  You should see a picture of our students as well as our goal along the left side.  You can choose from their menu items what and how much you’d like to donate, or you can just enter in an amount. When they check out & donate they need to write in the personal comment that it’s for Ms. Aulakh’s 2.1 English 9 class!
  2. Flashcards – finish all the poetry terms (you’ll be quizzed after winter break)
  3. Poems pkg – follow the instructions sheet & do the 1st page of poems (sound devices/rhyme/rhythm).  You DO NOT have to write on a separate page for now.  Write all of your notes, reactions, info onto the handout poems page.  You will be working in your groups next class & then will be writing down you info on a separate page
  4. LP Unit #1 – complete over winter break.

  1. Identity Project DUE! Remember to clearly label each assignment so I know which one it is.  Have your name, date & block, clearly marked, have your assignment sheet attached & make sure you check or indicate exactly what assignments you completed for the project.
  2. Narrative Terms quest – review your stories & quizzes to help you prepare.  See the grade 11 post for helpful videos or Kahoots.
  3. Good copy Project Journal due Friday

  3. Check the last post for Kahoot quizzes to help prepare you for your test.
  4. Have topic suggestions for us to focus on for your writing unit.

  2. Notebook: p. 19 – 2nd draft of Geraldine paragraph – pen, double spaced, etc.

  4. You will be writing your grade 8 letter in class Wed-Fri, so come prepared.  Feel free to come with ideas/notes of what you want to write or even to write it in advance.

  1. PROJECT – Due Dec. 20th- work time next class, so bring your supplies & work.  I’m going to make the JOURNAL requirement due on Dec. 22nd so you can focus on the 5 assignments for the actual project and then work on the journal separately.
  2. Characterization sheets – Dec. 18th

  4. Terms Quiz – Dec. 20th.  This will include narrative terms (look at your handouts) in connection to the stories.  This quiz is supposed to help you prepare for your unit test. See the Gr. 11 post for a variety of helpful VIDEOS.

  1. We’re in SECOND PLACE (after Ms. Bassi) for the Canned Food Drive! Woohoo! So go through your cupboards and go ask you family & neighbours to donate!
  2. LP Unit #2 Test & Workbook check – Dec. 19th! If you need more practice help, come on MONDAY
  3. Poetry Terms – new flashcards – Finish the 3 terms under the Figures of Speech heading AND do all the Versification terms
  4. HOMEWORK: Due Mon/Tues

  1. All Journals – #5-8 – Same as last time – in order, labelled & titled, multi-paragraph, good discussion that’s at least 1 pg double spaced, and peer edited.
  2. Narrative Presentations – Mon/Tues – Theme, Setting, & Other Techniques #2.  See previous post for helpful videos.  You need to see me before your presentation to give me your handout for photocopying and to ensure your presentation activities will all work, etc.
  3. Short Stories Unit TestWed/Thurs – 35 multiple choice Qs that will include definition of terms as well as understanding of each of the stories and application of the terms to the stories.  Ex.  What was the initiating event in the story…? or the main conflict in “Jade Peony” was? 
  4. How to study? – Review all of your story quizzes & story questions & narrative presentation notes/handouts and ensure your story notes & maps are accurately filled out because you will be allowed to reference these notes/maps in the last 5 mins of the test.  If you did them accurately they will be helpful, if you didn’t then they won’t! ENGLISH 9 – 2.1

HOMEWORK: Due Friday

  1. LP Review – Complete the review in these steps: Step 1.  Using one colour pen/pencil and without looking back at the lessons in Unit #2, try to do as many sections and questions that you can do.  Step 2. Using a different colour pen/pencil, do the sections and questions you left, but this time look back at the lessons to remind yourself of anything you had forgotten.  This will take a bit longer because it’s in 2 steps, but after we check the answers in class, you will CLEARLY know what you fully understand, what you sort of understand, and what you don’t know at all.  This will help you study better and hopefully do better on the test.
  2. Sentence Types practice handout – this will help you review your Simple/Compound/Complex sentences
  3. LP Unit #2 Test & Workbook check – Dec. 19th!
  4. Poetry Terms – 4 new flashcards – Term #1-4 under the heading Figures of Speech.  You will eventually be doing all of the terms, so if you have extra time, you might as well create more flashcards.
