HOMEWORK: Due Wed/Thurs

  1. If you’re going to be missing class for the basketball tournament, you need to ensure that you are not inconveniencing me or the class because of your absence.  Plan ahead, be prepare, and make sure you do what you need to do to keep up & contribute.

  3. Debate prep – you know your side, you should know your role, read the story carefully and come prepared with info to share and work with in class.

  2. Terms Quiz – Study all your Flashcard terms for a 12 Q quiz.
  3. Notebook: – Geraldine Moore character analysis: p. 13 Characterization Practice sheets; p. 14 S.T.E.A.L. Character Traits sheet, p. 15 Geraldine Moore Character Traits Brainstorm – using all the previous sheets, make a brainstorm list of different character/personality traits/qualities that Geraldine shows and possesses.  For example, she shows us that she is honest and outspoken when she calls out in English class.  After you brainstorm, try to list an example or reason (EVIDENCE) for that trait like I did in the above example.

The Great Canadian Mail Race – watch the following video about Canada to inspire you to look for a city, town, or village that has a high school or middle school with a grade 8 class.  Get the name AND address of the school that you would like to write a letter to. VIDEO ===> 150 Fun Facts About Canada – GO TO 0:39 SECS for a FUN LIST OF GOOFY PLACE NAMES IN CANADA – like Elbow, SK and even Crotch Lake, ON.
  6. Grade 8 Letter – get your supplies ready to include with your letter.

  4. Grade 8 Letter – gather what you’d like to include in your gr. 8 letter envelope: pictures, stickers, notes from your friends, etc.  It can’t be too big or heavy because it needs to fit in an envelope AND it can’t be something that will not go bad or perish and be stinky.  Keep everything you want to include in your locker or bring it with you for when we do the letter.

  1.  Canned Food Drive DonationsFollow your values of being kind, compassionate, generous, etc. and bring in donations to help those who need some food in their empty tummies!
  2. LP #20, 21, 22 – Complex & Compound Sentences
  3. Notebook: Journal #5 – p. 36-37 – 2nd Draft – Critical Thinking – Rewrite and revise your journal with special consideration of your sentence variety and structure.  You should try to have a good variety of sentences: Simple, Compound (FANBOYS), and Complex (that, which, who, whom, before, after, until, when, since, although, because, if, by, etc.) and maybe even some inverted sentences?  Don’t forget to USE COMMAS properly!

  1. Journal #6 – Behind the Headlines: Empathy journal from Hariharan’s POV. Remember to use the journal to practice your writing techniques & structure! 
  2. Story Notes (“Totem”) and Story Summary Map (“Behind the Headlines”)
  3. “Just Lather, That’s All” – read, highlight, do Qs Talking it Over #1-4, Irony #1-3 and Vocab matching
  4. Block 2.2 – read “Tell Tale Heart”, mark up 3 examples of whatever  technique your group was supposed to look for, and think of how it contributes to the story – mood, meaning, characters, conflict, etc.
