ENGLISH 9 – 2.1

HOMEWORK: Due Wednesday

  1. Writing Text – read p. 26-28 – Using Transitions
  2. Writing Pkg – do Practice Ex. #6 – recognizing transitions
  3. Jrnl #3 – Are you a fair/just person?  Explain with 3 reasons. (1 paragraph response) Fill in the BLT outline worksheet with your own ideas. Focus on a good Topic Sentence for your Introduction (top slice of bread) and your Concluding Sentence (bottom slice of bread).  The supporting details or middle of your BLT (3 paragraphs) can be in point form, but the points should be clear examples/reasons to explain your topic.  You will be writing your first draft next class using your outline, so if the more complete your outline, the easier it will be to write your draft.

HOMEWORK: Due Monday

  1. Values Pkg – read & highlight – Fair &  Just – & do Qs – 4. Is “justice” always fair?  Explain.  5. Is “fairness” always just? Explain. (Hint: Consider justice morally right or good, or as laws & rules.  Are rules and laws always fair to everyone? Consider fairness as treating people equally.  Is treating everyone equally always the just way?)

  4. Writing Text: Read “Concluding Sentences” AND Chp. 2 “Unity & Coherence” intro pages.
  5. Writing practice pkg: Do Practice #5 – Concluding Sentences AND Practice #1 – Unity (p. 19-21) Remember you’re only writing a couple of sentences, circling/underlining & crossing out sentences for the paragraphs.

  1. Journal #3: Race/ethnicity & Identity – Discuss how much/little your race/ethnicity impact your identity.  Remember – double spaced, in pen, multi-paragraph, at least 1 pg discussion.
  2. Indian Education” – read, highlight – we’ll start the story next class
  3. Story Maps #1-2 – will be collected next class (“The Friday Everything Changed” & “So What Are You, Anyway?”)

  2. Notebook: BLT Outline p. 6 – Topic: Discuss how “Autumntime” & “Big Yellow Taxi” are similar.  Write your 3 points and a concluding sentence for your outline. (Introduction/Topic Sentence: The story “Autumntime” and the song “Big Yellow Taxi” are similar in several ways.)
  3. Quiz – Poetry Sound devices terms – assonance, consonance, alliteration, rhyme scheme, repetition, onomatopoeia, stanza, ETC.

Journal #3 – Jade Peony – Discuss an experience(s) when you’ve felt caught between 2 or more cultures – your own & the majority/main stream.  How did/does it feel?  You can choose to focus on one particular experience or you can discuss them overall with references/examples that are specific to you.  If you have NO experience with this, then talk to people – family, friends – who have been through or are going through this. DOUBLE SPACED, IN PEN, MULTI-PARAGRAPH.

  5. We will be starting the Language Power grammar workbook next week, so make sure you bring it with you (Block 1.4) and if you haven’t bought one yet, bring $15 or buy one.  Block 2.3 I will give you your workbooks in class on Tuesday.
