ENGLISH 9 – 2.4

HOMEWORK: Due Wednesday

  1. LP #25 & 28 – We have basically finished Unit #2, so it would be wise to start reviewing for a Unit Test
  2. Journal #7 – Critical Thinking – write a 2nd draft & include a hook– as in rewrite your first draft & make changes/improvements based on the peer editing & your own editing.  You should then have TWO different versions/drafts of this Journal, not just 1 with changes written in.  
  3. Feb 1st – Good copy book review AND Good copy film fest movie review.

HOMEWORK: Due Tues

  2. Thesis Statements handout – write 25 thesis statements for the topics/subtopics you came up with last class
  3. Have your detailed compare & contrast outlines completed – both Point by Point & Block – you will be writing in class using your detailed outlines.   Remember the only differences between the 2 outlines will be your topic sentences.  All the info is the same; it’s just the body paragraphs will be organized different & therefore will have different topic sentences.

Use your paragraph planning sheet & LP lessons #68-71 to write a good, well-structured paragraph.  Follow the examples and tips on the Do’s/Don’ts sheet.  Remember, you MUST include at least 3 compound sentences & 3 complex sentences (LP #23)

  4. Essay Journal #2 – How does the author’s use of imagery help to express the impact & consequences of war?  Discuss with specific examples from the essay.

  1. Thesis statement handouts – Complete exercises #1, 2, 3, 4 – you can just write your answers/changes onto the handout 
  2. Making Thesis Statements – (last page of handout) – on the blank back page, come up with 5 TOPICS and for each, come up with 5 SUBTOPICSEx. Topic:  Cars  Subtopics: Types of Cars, New vs. Used Cars, Cars & the environment, Car Shows, History of Cars.  See the example on the handout.  You DO NOT have to write any thesis statements, you ONLY have to come up with 5 topics & 5 subtopics for each.  You will be writing Thesis Statements for your ideas in class.

  2. Fill in the Socratic Circle Discussion sheet with a few points for each Q on the essay “The Scar“.  You will be adding more info to the sheet as we read 4 more essays/articles, but if you fill out ideas now for “The Scar” it will make it easier for you later.

  2. Character writing – Geraldine Moore – fill in the character web for Geraldine 
  3. Paragraph Planning sheet – General topic: Discuss the character of Geraldine from the story “Geraldine Moore the Poet”. Choose 3 characteristics from your character web & write them as Point 1,2,3. Using the topic and your points, write a topic sentence.  You don’t have to write a concluding sentence and you don’t have to fill in the details for any of the points.
