ENGLISH 10 -1.1/1.2

HOMEWORK: Due Friday

  1. Journals #1-5 – in order, labelled, your own title, pen, double-spaced, multi-paragraph, good discussion (1 pg. min.), edited.
  2. Identity Project – rough work (notes, brainstorm, resources, etc.) for Parts 1 & 2.  You’ll have all class to work, so make sure you bring whatever you might need to complete rough copies for BOTH parts.

  1. Journals # 1-4 – collect – in order, labelled & with your own title, pen, double-spaced, edited, multi-paragraph, good discussion.
  2. In-class EssayTopic: Compare & contrast traditions in “Jade Peony” by W. Choy & “The Lottery” by S. Jackson. You will be allowed to use the outline worksheet I gave you last class.  Prepare notes & outline on this sheet ONLY.
  3. Compare & Contrast Outline – worksheet will be collected.

  4. Notebook: p. 25 – Hooks Practice – Use the info from p. 24 to practice writing different types of hooks for each of the topics.  Do NOT write in the type of hook you used, BUT DO attempt as many different types of hooks as you can.

  1. Journal #4 – Should Students be Rewarded for Effort – Notebook: p. 20 – 21 – 1st draft – Write a 5 paragraph essay, but focus on your 3 body paragraphs (Good Topic Sentences & strong supporting details).  You can use the review in the text to help.

  3. Red Writing Text – read pg 56- 60 Introductions
  4. Writing Practice Pkg – Do Practice #9 – Introductions – number the sentences in the order you think is best, then label the type of introduction

ENGLISH 11 – 1.3/2.2

HOMEWORK: Due Tues/Wed

  1. ANYONE who missed the terms quiz last class, MUST come in on MONDAY at lunch to write it.  It will take 10-15 mins & you will need blue/black pen, and NOTE for your absence
  2. Journal #4 – “The Lottery”: Story vs. Movie – What do the events of the story say about society/human nature?  Considering this, which version do you prefer, the story or the movie, and why? Watch the movie version here —> “The Lottery” short film
  3. Compare & Contrast notes – Traditions: “Jade Peony” vs. “The Lottery” – List out any similarities, but focus on the differences.  This is the brainstorm for a written response that you will be completing, so take the time to come up with as many ideas/details as you can.

HOMEWORK: Due Fri/Mon

  1. LP – “Review” – Do in 2 steps: Step 1 – do as many of the Review exercises as you can without looking back.  Step 2 – Use a different colour & finish whatever you left blank, but now look back through the unit to help you.
  2. LP – Unit #1 Test & Workbook check – Nov. 2/3
  3. Setting Pkg – Speak to the Senses – Read the descriptive paragraph & highlight/underline all the words & phrases that use good imagery. (help you see, hear, feel, smell, taste the scene). Then choose one of the sites listed & fill in the chart using creative, descriptive language – colours, shapes, sounds, tastes, etc.  You will be using your chart to write your own scene like the theatre scene you read. Block 1.4 – write a short paragraph/scene using your chart in the space on the worksheet.
  4. Block 2.3 – narrative terms quiz – setting, plot, characters
