ENGLISH 10 -1.1/1.2

HOMEWORK: Due Tuesday

  1. TKaMALL Qs & Vocab – go through and note the questions/vocab you don’t understand.  I will go over anything YOU ASK about.
  2. Character Compare &Contrast worksheet–  fill in the back side IN PENCIL.  Look at your brainstorm ideas.  Eliminate ideas that are minor or irrelevant, group ideas that are similar together, and then label or name them. Think of the STEAL categories- ex. How they treat other, their values/beliefs, etc. Choose the best 3 categories and write them into the arrows on the other side. Then fill in the boxes with details. Example:  Calpurnia & Atticus- Both have similar VALUES in the arrow in the middle. Then in the each character’s column, I’d write details about how their values are similar.

  1. Watch the following links in order to prepare for some of the issues and themes we’ll be studying in the novel.

    2. Ted Talks: Emtithal Mahmoud Poems  – A young woman uses poems to share her experience of genocide in Darfur
    3. E. Wiesel & Oprah at Auschwitz – You will never get to see or experience Auschwitz like in this interview.

HOMEWORK: Due Wed/Thurs

  1. “Stand By Me” – movie notes – will be collected
  2. “Stand By Me” conflict worksheet – choose 2 (most) important conflicts & fill in the boxes with examples from the movie.  The more details & examples the better.
  3. Block 1.4 – looking at the conflict sheet, choose 1 conflict & create an outline (TAG, TS, PEE, CS)
  4. Paragraph topic: Discuss conflict(s) in the movie “Stand By Me”.
  5. Independent Novel – keep reading because you’ll have a book group discussion on Fri/Mon

  1. Finish all TKaM novel Qs & Vocab – Tuesday AND  UNIT TEST – Thursday.
  2. Cycle of Oppression – fill in your own example based on issues in the novel.  Make sure you clearly label the stereotype AND do not leave it in pencil.  The stereotype should be TRUE/accurate to the novel, but how it plays out in the cycle can me from you imagination.  How could or would that stereotype play out in the novel.
  3. TKaM Characters worksheet – brainstorm & fill in the Venn diagram for your 2 characters

  1. The Scar” &”The Other Hell” – Discussion Qs – each group will be sharing their ideas
  2. Watch videos  to help you fill in the handout—> CBS – E. Wiesel Funeral 2016 AND E. Wiesel on Taking Action AND Elie Wiesel’s Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech AND R. Dallaire’s Acceptance of the Elie Wiesel Award AND   Some E. Wiesel Quotes AND E. Wiesel & Oprah at Auschwitz 
  3. Intro Journal – Write an organized paragraph response discussing the following Qs – (1)  Is it possible for 1 person (you) to create change/make an impact on others or the world? (2) Could you?  Would you?  Have you?  (3) Do we have a responsibility as citizens or human beings to do anything for others? Explain. (Consider the greater consequences of war/conflict)

  1. Independent Novel – keep reading!  We’ll do a Book Group discussion in a week, so make sure you’ve read enough to actually participate in the discussion.
  2. Movie Notes – add to the notes.  I will be collecting the notes AND you will need the info to help write the conflict paragraph.
