BE CURIOUS! Thanks to my 8’s whose curiosity knows no bounds!

I’m supposed to be in a lunch meeting right now (teachers, we eat and work!).

But i have some students who asked really good questions today! My number one rule, be curious!

A sample of today’s questions, around Circulation, the heart, and capillaries:

  1. Does space affect the heart? An open ended question would then become, how does space affect the heart (I hope Olvin becomes a scientist/astronaut)?
  2. Does diffusion happen in space? Knowing that zero Kelvin is absolute zero, work backwards and think about what has to happen to allow for diffusion to happen. What is the temperature of outer space, on average? I think we were considering an atmosphere but no gravity. What about in outer space outside of your space capsule?
  3. Time to go to the meeting…

Keep it up grade 8’s, life is so extraordinary!

Biology 12 Research Paper Template and Chap 4 Membrane Disorders

Biology 12 – We will be looking into some of the most prevalent disorders of the Cell Membrane including but not limited to, Cystic Fibrosis, Alzheimer’s, and Hyaline Membrane Disease.

Hyaline Membrane Disease - a disease of preterm infants in which the lungs
are not fully mature at the time of birth, resulting in respiratory
distress. Pneumocytes are not fully differentiated and so the lungs are
not capable of the normal oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange that is required
after birth.

Alzheimer's - oxidative stress (in the brain) caused by Alzheimer's
results in alterations in the phosphlipids that comprise the cell membrane
and disrupts the function of affected brain cells.

Cystic fibrosis - a defect in a calcium-ion channel results (for unclear
reasons) in excess production of fluid in the lungs.

Template for Research Papers

Name: ________________________________ Date: ________________ Block: ________

Use the following guiding principles to formulate a well-researched and articulate paper:

  • Always provide your citations at the end. Most work is researched from reputable online sources, you must use 2 outside of Wikipedia. LiveStrong and government websites might be more reliable than run of the mill websites found by simply entering key terms.
  • Open with an introduction both stating your thesis and a summaryof what you will be writing about.
  • Include within the body, a brief history of the disorder; the research and development currently surrounding this disorder; what the disorder is in a nutshell; the prognosis and likelihood of a remedysymptoms; etc not necessarily in this order and preferably in their own paragraphs as common sense dictates
  • conclusion summarizing your paper and including a personal connection to this topic and/or the reason you chose this over other diseases.

You need not include all the information on the web in this paper. Two well written pages (usually around 500 words) plus 2 diagrams or photos or images (cited please) from the web will suffice. The images should be appended or pasted after the written portion of your paper.

Please us your class time wisely.

Printer issues; please anticipate as research papers are due at the bell with no leniency given around leaving to print in the learning commons. After the bell late work will be assessed as per Biology 12 Course Outline guidelines.

Plagiarism: research gathered is to be in your own words. Academic honesty policies abound on the JO Website, VSB Policy guidelines, and on Mr Sommerfeld’s bulletin board near the front entrance 😉

Biology 12 and BCIT Nursing Program

It’s not just for women anymore yo. The world can be your oyster :)*

https://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/8875bsn

BCIT’s program for Nursing seems to be in high demand. This blog entry is to tell/remind you there’s a November 1st opening for application. The earlier you apply the better.  OH WAIT; it looks like you need 18 credits or 3 full year courses after high school (maybe Langara or somewhere else) before you even apply! (ACK) AND you have to be a Canadian Resident.

What to do!?

Apply (now!) to somewhere close to home (Langara, take your 3 courses, on Tuesday and Thursday only, and work part time).

OR live a little, and take that money from your parent’s RESP and go somewhere! You have so many places in Canada AND WASHINGTON STATE to go to, why not stretch your wings, go somewhere else for a year? I don’t recommend Manitoba but if you have relatives there, why not?! Never been to Saskatchewhatever, now’s your chance to meet some crazy amazing and interesting people!

What about UBC?

The pre-requisities (pre-req’s) for UBC’s nursing program include credit hours (courses) from other colleges or universities. Almost every college/university in the lower mainland teaches the courses you need. For example, VCC has the equivalent Human Anatomy and Physiology course (HAP), Biology 1120 and 1220 (first then second semesters).

UBC’s nursing program sounds interesting. It’s an intensive 20 month program, AFTER you do a bunch of course work (Copied from the UBC website: To be considered for admission to the BSN program, you must have a completed bachelor’s degree or significant progress (minimum of 48 non-nursing university transferable credits) toward a degree in another field of study. Note: Applied degrees will be considered on case-by-case basis) at ANY accredited university or college

Aside from making a difference in the lives of individuals throughout the world, choosing to work in BC comes with a lot of considerations, one of which is salary. Moving to Vancouver Island might not be an option for everyone, but as a sample of the type of salary grid/rate of pay, use this link as a starting point:

Anywhere other than BCIT or UBC?

Sometimes a community college is a cheaper option, and closer to where you live (or along a major bus route!). The following is a link to Vancouver Community College’s information on Nursing:

WAIT! Kwantlen has NURSING??!!

you bet! check it out! maybe you can get first year nursing starting next September!!

What about DOUGLAS COLLEGE, for nursing?

TOO LATE!!! (but call them, maybe you’re a really nice person and they’ll make an exception 😉

Science 8

Chapter 1.2 starts our discussion on Cells

Memorial pond had some larger organisms in it, maybe you saw some (see previous blogs) ~ we were hoping to see some of these:

During class, we’ll review how to use a microscope while viewing some of these creatures ~ Protists. We only have prepared slides now, no wet mounts (unhappy face).

Chapter 1.2 in the Workbook is due just before Thanksgiving 🙂
