“I intend to pursue a career in the medical field and potentially combine this with my interest in technology. My science fair project for this year involved creating an app for in-patients of hospitals and rehabilitation centers, and it is definitely something I want to continue working on as I move forward in my life.”

“A memorable experience I had with Odyssey was participating in the Science Fair and having access to the supportive community that helped propel my project. Without “Hydrofinity”, I likely wouldn’t have found the success that I did, so the experience of the Science Fair will continue to affect me well into my post-secondary journey. In ten years, I envision myself running a technology startup employing Engineering-Physics and Artificial-Intelligence to pioneer tomorrow’s solutions to today’s pressing environmental problems, especially the global water crisis. I plan to get there via hard work, perseverance, expanding my knowledge through experience, networking, and building my company as a lean startup.”

“At David Thompson, my most memorable experience is leading the Math Challengers club, where I helped teach our club members about math to prepare them for the annual Math Challengers competition. I led the club with my friend Alex, so if you know anything about us, we were flying by the seat of our pants most of the time. Still, it was very rewarding to be able to help students become excited about math and to help make their Fridays a bit more fun. Most of our club members happened to be in Odyssey too.

Outside of David Thompson (but still kind of related), the most memorable experience for me would be going to Quebec City to learn French for five weeks in the summer under the Explore bursary. It was my Grade 8E French teacher that encouraged me to do it because she had done the same program when she was my age. Turns out, it was one of the best decisions of my life. I met people from around the world, while drastically improving my French. I also really grew as a person as a result of it. If it was not for Odyssey, I would never have known about the program nor had the support to “take the leap” to do the program.”

“My most memorable experience at David Thompson was managing the school market in my senior year. It gave me the chance to interact with the David Thompson community and explore my area of interest which is commerce. My academic aspirations are to complete my undergraduate studies at Sauder then acquire a law degree at UBC’S Peter Allard School of Law. I hope to specialize in corporate law.”

“Memorable experiences that I had at DT include being the manager of the school store, the Trojan Market. Responsibilities include being a cashier, compiling income statements, plus teaching the younger employees all about the establishment. This provided me with valuable real-world experience in the retail sector. In addition, I enjoyed being the executive head of the New Faces Leaders Club. This club organizes welcoming activities for incoming Grade 7 students and Grade 8 students. Beginning as a member and now the executive head, I oversee junior leaders and assist the club teacher. I enjoy connecting with students to ease the transition between elementary and high school. Both of these activities allowed me to form connections with people in the school community who I may not have talked with if not for these extracurriculars. Besides that, I joined both initiatives in Grade 10, allowing me to climb up the ranks and learn from those more experienced. I was inspired by the older students to achieve success not just in my academic courses.

It is fascinating to observe how and why people are wired differently, making psychology my subject of interest. Combining psychology with my passion for business, I eventually aim to work in the field of Human Resources.”

“Memorable experiences include field trips: – both as a part of Odyssey and with the band, notably the overnight trips to Vancouver Island with both groups. Science fairs – participating in competitions and mentoring my peers has been something very enjoyable and a very good experience for me. Future plans include working on developing technology to help mitigate the effects of climate change on Earth, work as a professional musician on the side, have a family with 2+ kids”

“My participation in the science fair was very memorable. It provided me with an outlet to collaborate with friends while creating novel solutions to real-world problems. My grade 10 project was especially unforgettable: my friend and I tackled the issue of antibiotic resistance in a UBC laboratory and presented our project at the regional fair. By combining my interests in computer science and medicine, I intend to innovate through a career in biotechnology.”

“Although I cannot exactly pinpoint one particular experience, I have been heavily involved in athletics throughout the years, especially on school teams. All those practices and games have taught me the value of perseverance and determination, as well as allowed me to develop strong leadership skills and build new connections with students from the school and around the community. I find that being involved in physical activity has greatly benefited my academic progress, allowing me to keep up with both my physical and mental health as well as work on my time management skills.

As this chapter of my life comes to a close, I have decided to continue my educational journey at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture in the Bachelor of Design in Architecture program. Through a solid foundation from undergraduate education, I would be able to achieve my educational goals of learning about the environmental approaches to sustainable building, as well as the application of social and cultural aspects to the areas of architectural and urban design. Going into this program, I hope to gain foundational knowledge in all disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism in preparation for graduate studies in a Masters of Architecture program, eventually going on to pursue a career as a registered architect.”
