Wednesday May 23

1-3 S.S 9: I gave students an overview of what the rest of the year will look like. We are completing a short unit on the Laurier Era, and then students will be working on their Final Inquiry Project for the rest of the term. The Final Inquiry Project will be in place of a final exam, so it will be worth 15% of students final grade. I then gave a short lecture on the Laurier Boom, and students had class time to complete a worksheet. This worksheet is due next class, May 25.

1-1 and 1-2 S.S 8: Students worked on their geography inquiry projects in the library. Remember, projects are due on May 31, and each group will be presenting to the class that day.

Update on the Past Two Weeks

Hello!

Apologies for not updating the blog in the past two weeks. Both the grade 8’s and the grade 9’s have been working hard on projects, so I wanted to give a quick update on those.

Grade 9 S.S: The Mock Trial is completed, but the jury owe me the second edition of their newspaper at the beginning of class TOMORROW – May 23. If it is digital please send it to my email before class, if it is a hard copy then please bring it to class and be prepared to hand it in at the very beginning. We will now be moving on to learning about the history of BC, the Laurier era, and the struggle for human rights in Canada. After this, students will be working on their final inquiry project!

Grade 8 S.S: We are in the middle of our Regional Geography of North America Inquiry project! Students have created their inquiry questions and have started researching. All classes have 3 more classes to work on the project, and then groups will be presenting to the class on May 30 for block 2-1, and May 31 for blocks 1-1 and 1-2. After this, students will be working on their final inquiry project!

First edition of Newspapers are due at the end of class on May 9th!!

1-2 S.S 8: Today we investigated explorers that explored the interior of Western Canada. Students got into groups of 4 and each chose an explorer to research about. Friday May 4

2-4 ELL S.S: I gave a short lecture that reviewed Canadian Confederation. As well, we talked about the British North America Act. Then, students completed a worksheet that covered these topics. The worksheet is due next class, Tuesday May 8.

2-3 ELL Reading: Today we watched “The Secret Path” – a digitized version of Gord Downie’s book about Chanie Wenjak, an Indigenous boy who ran away from Residential School in hopes of going home. He died trying to go back home. It is a beautiful story that shows how absolutely destructive and devastating residential schools were to Indigenous people. It is a great companion story to “Fatty Legs”, the novel we have been studying.

2-1 S.S 8: Students investigated the merits of different explorers today. Students worked in groups and each chose an explorer of Canada to learn more about. Then, they had to choose who they thought was the BEST explorer based on some criteria we made, and they had to provide evidence to prove it. This was in in class activity – no homework over the weekend!

Today we worked on building our compare and contrast skills as well as inquiry skills. Students were to create a Venn Diagram that compared the similarities and differences of the Hudsons Bay Company and the North West Company. “How similar or different are the HBC and the NWC: Very similar? Somewhat similar? Or not similar at all?”

Your task to solve this question:

Create a venn diagram that compares the similarities and differences of the Hudson’s Bay Company and the Northwest Company.

  • Read Pg. 256-264 and write notes about the Hudson’s Bay Company in their section of the Venn Diagram
  • Read Pg. 264-269 and write notes about the Northwest Company in their section of the Venn Diagram
  • Look at both sides of the diagram and find what each company has in common – write these similarities in the center section of the Venn diagram.

Now that you can visually see the similarities and differences of the companies, please write an answer to the inquiry question below your Venn Diagram or on the back side of it.
