This week is a VERY important week in your personal development. You will be travelling the city representing JO, your family and yourself. Look around and think of others. Give your seat on the bus to someone else, hold open a door, offer to help carry things. These may seem like little things but it shows you are thinking of others. Every time I travel with students people come and ask what school I’m from. They are always wanting to commend our behaviour and thoughtfulness. Don’t break my positive record.
Monday in class we will go over the week, expectations and how to prepare for each day. We have formed travel groups and you have my cell number. Don’t publish it online but share it in case of emergency. Each day will have a pre-reading exercise and a blog post. I’ll give you a topic to post about to help focus.
Tuesday: YVR and GeoCaching Meet at school – room 103 8:40
You may bring your computer if you like. YVR has wifi and part of the activity will require at least one per group. However, I may modify if it looks like rain since I don’t want damaged computers from the outdoor geocaching. Maybe wrap them in plastic and turn off?
Pre-Reading
Tours of YVR (self-guided tour.pdf)
Part 1: The above link is a map and a guided tour. Some will start at #1, some at #5, and some at #10. This is NOT a race. At each location, take a picture and ask yourself “Why did they design this area this way? or Why did they include this here?” [approximately 1hour]
Part 2: Find a window of the runway where you can observe takeoff and landings. IT would also be helpful to have a view of the arrivals board. Take a picture of a plane landing. Search what kind of plane it is, where is it coming from? What gate is it “parking” at? Go there. Count how many people exit. What do you notice about these people? What are they wearing? Men? Women? Kids? Count how many of each. Search the cost of the flight online. Estimate how much money people paid for the whole plane. Then, how much does a pilot make? What about the rest of the airplane staff? How much is airplane gas? In your cost analysis, does it appear profitable to own and operate a plane? [30 min]
Part 3: Watch the runway for exactly 15minutes. Record how many planes take off and land. Extrapolate how many people are arriving and leaving Vancouver in a day, week, year. Use the arrival-departure board to confirm or check your numbers. [30min or so]
