Preparing the Bamboo

Preparing the bamboo

I’ve cut to approximate lengths plus an inch on each end for the join curve and measuring mistakes. Probably too long but what the heck. Better too long than too short.20151127_09271820151127_092518

I drilled out the compartments … are they called knuckles? … so it would breathe and not explode when heated.

Then into the oven at 250f or maybe a bit higher? I’m not sure of the time but the intent is to brown the outside and get all the water out.

It turned out quite well. The colour started to patina nicely. The ends of the smaller (1″ dia) tubes started to burn after 15min and I left the larger in for another 10 past that. No water bubbled out (which is what I expected) so the bamboo must have been already dry enough.

Next step?

Build a jig. Order a headtube or aluminum stock to make my own. Get a seattube insert 27.2mm. Also, while online, order the hemp fiber for wrapping. I wonder if there is any place right here in Vancouver? More research.
