Mike Harcourt (1943 – )

Mike Harcourt was born in Edmonton. He grew up in Kerrisdale and was elected student council president while attending Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. He went on to the University of British Columbia where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree and articled in Law. As a lawyer, he worked with the Law Students Legal Advice Program and helped found the Legal Aids Society of BC. From 1973 – 1980 he served as an alderman on the Vancouver City Council, and mayor from 1980 to 1986. He described his political views as “centre left”. In 1986 he was elected as an NDP candidate to the BC Legislature. Five years later, he led the New Democratic Party to victory, and became the Premier of British Columbia, a position he occupied until 1996. In 2002, he suffered a severe spinal cord injury as the result of a fall, which left him a partial quadriplegic. In 2007, he received an honorary doctoral degree in Law from the University of British Columbia.

 Gregory Henrique (1963 – )

Gregory Henrique was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. After completing high school, he went on to complete a Bachelor of Architecture degree at Carleton University in Ontario, and a Masters degree in the History and Theory of Architecture at McGill University. In 1989, he joined his father’s practice, Henriquez & Partners Architects, and became a full partner in 1995. Henrique has been described as a supporter of ethical architecture, the idea that building aesthetics should not be separate from its ethics, and that architecture should contain an element of social justice by being inclusive and oriented within the community it serves, rather than simply being the instrument of private interests. Henrique’s projects include residential buildings that offer affordable residential ownership to people of moderate means, and the large scale mixed income, mixed use Woodward’s Redevelopment in Downtown Vancouver.

Tyla Flexman (1986 – )

Tyler Flexman was born in New Westminster, British Columbia. She started playing field hockey while attending Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. She went on to play for the Canadian Women’s National Field Hockey Team from 2004 – 2012. She played in numerous international competitions including the Junior World Cup and the Junior Pan Am Cup (2005), the Pan American Cup (2009), the Commonwealth Games (2010), and the Pan American Games (2011). In 2012, she won the BC Female Field Hockey Player of the Year.
