OUTDOOR PLAY AT RECESS AND LUNCH

BE PREPARED FOR OUTDOOR RECESS AND LUNCH BREAKS

Fun Fact:  Students spend their entire Recess and Lunch Breaks outside, rain or shine!  As such, It’s essential to teach your children the necessary skills to help them feel comfortable during cold or wet days!

Do a quick check just to make sure your children have the skills to be independent with self-care…

Does your child know how to do the following without adult support?

  • change in and out of shoes and boots quickly?
  • wear and do up his/her/their waterproof rain jacket?  (e.g. buttons, zippers, clasps, etc.)
  • put on and take off rain pants?
  • change out of wet clothing?
  • open and close his/her/their own umbrella easily?
  • have awareness of the surroundings before opening an umbrella to avoid hurting others?

If your child is still developing some of those skills, I encourage you to practise often at home.  Let’s work together to foster his/her/their independence!

Please remember:  Your child’s bag of extra change of clothes is meant for EMERGENCIES (i.e. bathroom accidents).  Students should not need to access them every single time it rains.  I am sure you can imagine how disruptive it can be if children are constantly asking to change after every break.
