LET’S BE A “NUT-AWARE” CLASS COMMUNITY!

Did you know that some students in our school have life-threatening allergies to nuts?

What triggers a reaction can be different for each child.  While some kids react when they ingest nuts, some react from touching surfaces that have traces of nuts.  20 years ago, I had a student who would react even from smelling peanuts nearby!

An outright “ban” on nut products would be impossible to enforce, given we don’t know how snacks and lunches are made/prepared for every single student in our school.

So as a classroom teacher, I can only encourage families to refrain from sending nut products – if possible – out of consideration for those who do have life-threatening nut allergies.

As a class, we will also emphasize the following to avoid cross contamination:

• not sharing food ever, no matter how tempting it is
• proper hand hygiene habits

Collectively, we can make a difference by making sure every student feels safe at school!
