My Estimate iBeacon developers kit arrived today as promise!
I first got a taste of the power of Apple iBeacon technology this summer in San Diego during an Apple Distinguished Educators summer institute. It uses bluetooth and proximity sensors to detect locations and proximity ideal for indoor locations and in absence of GPS. How this technology will apply to education is still an unknown but I am very interested to find out.
There will be some serious R&D to be had for sure as the true power requires some coding with some SDKs but I always have hungry students looking to explore the latest and greatest innovations. The best part is the technology is new to all of us and we can explore together.
I have been experimenting with 3D printing for the past month and loving it. For the past 4-5 years, the digital immersion students have been looking at innovation and remixing of ideas and products but now they can take their ideas to next level…physical pre-production mock-ups and prototyping.
This year, the grade 10s are exploring 3D design and printing to make their ideas come to life and then they will create Kickstarter type videos to market their ideas.
The Digital Immersion class of 2016 get an audience with His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama today. His Holiness sat in on a lesson on the science of the mind facilitated by Mrs. Martin and Dr. Sande of UBC. It was a tremendous honour to meet His Holiness and speak with him.
We are very excited about the introduction of Classroom by Google.
With classroom, we have a seamless solution to organizing announcements, discussions and assignments. In addition, Classroom seamlessly integrates with Google Drive allow us to work directly from classroom as well as share files, docs and more.
We hope you are enjoying your summer break and look forward to seeing you in September. As well, we are looking forward to meeting our new class of 2019.
The City of Vancouver wants to be the Greenest City in the World by 2020 and our Digital Immersion students are going to help with the use of their iPad. Let’s start by doing research and getting background information.
