Borrowing books

You can return your library books to school!
There are baskets at both entrance door to the school (on the west-facing/Maple side) to collect your books.

In this unusual year, I have decided to continue to lend books over the summer. If you want to, please continue to enjoy your books and magazines. Keep them in a safe place so you know where to find them when it is time to return them all in September.

You may borrow books from the library for reading over the summer. The instructions for how to request books via the online catalog, including a screencast video, are in Vol 4 of the library newsletter. All the library newsletters are posted in the library channel on your Class Team.

All primary classes have a book exchange period each week. Intermediate students are supported in reading at their own pace as they continue to develop as mature readers by self-selecting to come to Open Book Exchange (Tues, Wed, Thurs mornings 9:00-9:30).

I impose a few different borrowing limits on different grades at different times of year:

  • Kindergarten students start the year by taking 1 book at a time.
  • Primary students start the year borrowing up to 3 books at a time.
  • Intermediate students may borrow up to 4 books at the start of the year.

As students get back in the habits of borrowing and returning books to the library, I will increase the borrowing limits for each grade*. There is more flexibility in the intermediate grades (students who have a challenging time keeping track of their books will have stricter limits than voracious readers.)
*I am able to allow students to borrow more books if I have parent volunteers to help with shelving.

Students may borrow books for two weeks but we encourage then to exchange sooner if they’re finished. Books may be renewed if more time is needed.

Lost books will be charged a replacement and processing cost. See Mme Brogan if you think you might have lost a library book.
