Item 3 – Principal’s Report Brent Schieman

Literacy Exam

  • Literacy exam is NOT based on any English course
  • It involves being able to read and gather information from many different written sources and then be able to communicate those ideas in various written outputs
  • Occurs in grade 10 and in grade 12
  • Scored out of 4
  • UBC will require a 3 of 4 minimum in order to be accepted to any programs
  • At JO grade 10’s will write in April, grade 12’s will write in January (in case they need to rewrite)
  • Encourage grade 12’s to do practice exam on the Ministry website
  • JO students (VSB students) have never written the grade 12 Literacy exam before

Power Outage

  • Decided to keep students at the school as it was only about an hour without power and the school was bright enough
  • District staff came to assess

Pro D Day on Nov 26

JO Classic is ON and spectators will be allowed!

Grad is looking at Chan Centre for the ceremony again but because of not being allowed to ask students to show proof of vaccination, it might not be feasible

School Field Trips are allowed back in January but there are still lots of things to consider regarding vaccination passports

  • Parents expressed concerns about wanting their kids to be able to attend field trips
  • Parents asked if there was a way to make field trip forms that would take these things into consideration
  • It is a VSB issue rather than an individual school decision

Finance Committee (teachers/staff) want to ensure that there is equity when it comes to distribution of funds

  • Consider that this PAC is for the entire student body and not for Mini School only
  • Fund requests for teachers/staffs/clubs have been submitted and reviewed by Mr. Scheiman and the Fincance Committee
  • The requests that made the cut are all submitted and PAC can see all the requests (some funding requests can be better supported by other means or do not qualify for PAC funding)
  • Group of PAC volunteers will meet in December to grant the requests and distribute the funds equitably
