GORDON HAPPENINGS

As we approach the last month of the school year, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the parents and guardians who have been such a support in our classes and at our events. Your dedication and active participation truly make a difference in creating a vibrant and thriving school community. We extend a special thank you to all the parents who attended and supported our recent school events and happenings such as the Spring Fling, PAC meetings, Welcome to Kindergarten, Talent Show, Track and Field, and all the field trips that took place this season. Your presence and encouragement added immense value to these occasions and made them memorable experiences for our students. We appreciate the time, effort, and enthusiasm you have invested in supporting our school.

School Calendar 2024-25 – please visit our website to download the school calendar for 2024-25. This calendar includes holidays, our school professional development days when school is not in session for students as well as early dismissal dates for student/parent conferences.

Grade 7 FarewellGrade 7 Farewell will be held on Wednesday, June 19 at 1:30 pm. Grade 7 families will be receiving additional information with more details shortly. A notice will be going home next week.

Volunteer Tea – please look for a special invite from your child to our Volunteer Tea on Thursday, June 20 at 2:00 pm.

Summary of Learning Update – Our final CSL report card will be going home to families on Monday, June 24. This is different from the last two learning updates as this one will reflect your child’s learning for the whole year. For more information, please visit our website HERE.

Are you moving? We are asking families to reach out to the office if you know you will not be attending Gordon in the Fall. It is very helpful for us to know before September if you are leaving Gordon so we can offer a space for those families on our waitlist.

The last day of school for all students is on Thursday, June 27.  This is a full day; school will be in session from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm. If your family will be leaving school early, we will hold the report card to be picked up in September.  We are not able to mail report cards or give them to anyone but the legal parent or guardian of the student.

SCHOOL STREETS

May 31 – Last day of the School Streets program. We will have a celebration after school with a bike mechanic station by West Point Cycles. They will provide complimentary check ups and quick tune ups for kids’ bikes – a great opportunity to get the bikes ready for Bike to School Week! The community has really enjoyed the freedom of having a no vehicle street in front of the school. We would like to see this continue so please consider parking a block away and having your child walk to school. This new habit will help to keep everyone safe! HUGE thank you to Maya Goldstein and her dedicated team of parent volunteers! We really appreciate all the hard work you put into making our School Streets such a success!

WALK & WHEEL EVENT – June 3 – June 7

Bike to School Week is an annual celebration where we encourage students of all ages to bike, roll, or walk to school. Active travel to and from school is associated with positive environmental, social, and safety benefits for students of all ages.

Join us for some fun activities throughout the week. Here are some important dates to note:

Monday June 3 – Kick off Bike to School Week! Free fruit shakes when arriving at school by the bike racks on the Bayswater side
Friday June 7 – Celebration of Bike to School Week! Muffins, fruit, and lemonade for everyone walking, biking, or rolling to school! By the bike racks on the Bayswater side.
Our Bike Bus will run every day during Bike to School Week – Two routes starting from Kits House and Tatlow Park at 8:40am!
At the school there will be trivia questions and a draw for prizes every day!

Bike Parking – if we have more bikes than our bike racks can accommodate, then we will use the outside of the fence on the gravel field to lock bikes on. Parent volunteers will be helping direct traffic.

Scooter Parking – fingers-crossed we have our new scooter rack installed but if not, we will use the front hallway outside the gym to park scooters. Please park your scooter by your division sign.

RECYCLING SOFT PLASTICS

HUGE thank you to the staff and families for all the hard owrk they did bringing in their soft plastics. It is amazing how much we collected! We can’t wait to see how much it will weigh! Thak you to Ms. Stamp for organizing this initiative. Some of the students are already talking about what we can do next year!

SPRING WEATHER

As the weather hopefully gets nicer, so does the need to dress and prepare ourselves for the sun.  Please remember to send your child to school with a hat, cool clothing, and suntan lotion already on.  We will not be able to apply suntan lotion to children.  Don’t forget their water bottle as well.  Thanks for your support!

SPORTS DAY – Friday, June 14

Sports Day will be held on June 14 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Your child will participate in fun and silly activities with their classes between 9:15 am – 11:30 am. Students will then have lunch in their classrooms followed by their regular outside play from 12:05 – 12:52 pm. We will meet outside again for Grade Races. Sports Day should end around 2pm. If you are planning on taking your child out of school early that day, please let your child’s classroom teacher and the office know prior to June 9. Your child’s teacher will assign your child a team colour. Please send your child ready to be outside for most of the day with a hat, water bottle and sunscreen. Parents and family members are welcome to watch on the sidelines. Thank you to the PAC for providing a treat for the students on the day.

MESSAGE FROM OUR LIBRARIAN, MS. Z

It’s that time of year when we ask that all the school library books are returned for inventory purposes. Please return all library books by Monday, June 10.  The VPL children’s librarian from the Kitsilano branch will be coming on June 17 to talk about their great summer reading program for kids.

A big thank you to the PAC who paid for ‘authorstrator’ Jeremy Tankard (of Grumpy Bird fame) to come and present to all our Gordon students. Jeremy shared his journey from reluctant reader to author/illustrator including his first book he made at age seven!

Thank you also to families who have donated so many great books to our school library. They add to our weekly new book display which always generates excitement. I’ve been building an ongoing purchasing wish list for next year.

A special thank you to Anna Armas Alvarez De La for her unwavering dedication as a library volunteer.  She has been volunteering regularly in the library for 8 years since her daughter started kindergarten!  Thanks also to regular library volunteer Kay Weisman and to retired teacher-librarian Gena Kolsen who has spent countless hours making the library a better place since January. It has been a pleasure to work alongside all of you.

Ms. Zdriluk

RBC RACE FOR THE KIDS

A message from Ms. Sinclair:

It’s that time of the year again! I’ve signed Gordon up as a team for this year’s RBC Race for the Kids, which works towards raising funds for childhood cancer programs and research, as well as mental health initiatives. In the past, Gordon Elementary has been placed among the top earning teams in terms of fundraising. Our first year, we raised over $3,000 as a community, followed by last year’s total of almost $6,000 and last over 10,000. I have set our goal as $3000.

The race will be held this year on Sunday, June 9, with a meeting point right beside Nat Bailey Stadium. Below, I’ll included the link to register for our team. If you pledge to raise at least $50.00, the sign-up fee is only $5.00. It is always great to see Gordon Families out running!

The following link will take you to the sign-up page for our team. Should you need any help, please don’t hesitate to ask. Select whether you’d like to walk or run the 2K or 5K.

PAC EVENTS

Gordon parents and caregivers are invited to attend the upcoming PAC AGM, to be held on Thursday, June 6 at 6:30 pm in the school library.  This will be an opportunity to celebrate the successes of the year and also to look ahead to next year.  There will be votes on the PAC budget and PAC Exec members for the 2024-2025 school year.  There will also be a vote on adopting amended PAC Bylaws, which have been modernized to be consistent with those of other PACs.  Appreciation goes to Lawson Lundell for donating their time and expertise to work with our current PAC Exec to make these updates.  Please find them available at this link (in an editable version) and attached as a PDF for review prior to the AGM.
