GORDON HAPPENINGS

Staff and students are excited that we have been able to open things up a bit and plan for things like fieldtrips and other end of year activities. We are still cautious though as not everyone is comfortable yet to return to what things were like before the pandemic. We really appreciate how supportive and encouraging families have been through it all. A huge thank you for all your support!

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank our staff who coached our basketball teams. Mr. Patrick and Coach Jane for the Senior basketball teams and Keion and Mr. Ng for the Junior basketball team. The students all played with great Gordon spirit and made amazing gains in their skill and their basketball sense. Way to go Gordon Penguins! Families, our final sporting team for the season is Track and Field for Grades 3 – 7. Students were given permission forms today and our first practise starts on Thursday morning at 8:00 AM, rain or shine!

It is that time of year where we begin the process of organizing our school for next year.  Please click the following link: Class Placement Parent Information Form.  This is not a form that parents can use to request what class they would like their child to be placed in next year.  It is an opportunity to provide the school with additional information about your child’s learning profile that we will consider in collaboration with class placements.  Please reflect carefully on the information provided on the form. No form will be accepted after Friday, May 27th and if names of staff members are used.

Thank you for registering your child at Gordon Elementary. Due to space limitations, we request a maximum of 1 parent/guardian to accompany our new kindergarten students to this event.  We request that you please do not bring younger siblings along with you. This is a time for parents and children to learn together.

This will be a great opportunity for you to meet other parents and students who will be attending in September 2022 as well as some of the Gordon Staff.  Activities to encourage readiness for Kindergarten will be shared, and each child will receive a complimentary gift bag with FREE educational materials to take home.  We encourage parents to continue practicing these activities at home to help prepare their child for kindergarten.

If for whatever reason, your child is not able to attend our school in September, we ask you to inform the school office as soon as possible.

Please R.V.S.P. to this invite by May 16, 2022 to secure your child’s spot at this event.

SOGI CLUB

The SOGI Club is doing a fundraiser for Rainbow Refugee, an organisation that helps bring LGBTQ+ people fleeing persecution to Canada. We will be collecting money in a bucket in the office. Several teachers have agreed to ‘get iced’ in support of the fundraiser, the more money we raise, the more teachers will be ice-bucketed! This fundraiser will be going for three weeks, May 3rd – May 20th. We appreciate all your support.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR

May 2-13

Ms. Juric, our school librarian, is excited to announce our 2nd Virtual Book Fair! Partial proceeds are donated back to Gordon to be used to purchase more books for our school library. Purchases will be delivered directly to the school and handed out to students once the fair is over. Thank you for supporting our school library!

GARDEN BEDS

Students are very excited about seeing their hard work growing in our garden beds.  A number of divisions have been learning about where our food comes from and how to grow our food.  Besides the garden beds, classes have also been part of a project called “spuds in tubs” where they are growing potatoes in pots.  To learn more click here.  As tempting as it is for kids to explore and play in the garden beds, we would appreciate your support in reminding your children that our garden beds are part of our outdoor classrooms and that they need to be respected.  Our teachers and students are very proud of our garden and would like to see their hard work rewarded with a bountiful crop to harvest.

SPRING WEATHER

As the weather hopefully gets nicer, so does the need to dress and prepare ourselves for the sun.  Please remember to send your child to school with a hat, cool clothing and suntan lotion already on.  We will not be able to apply suntan lotion to children.  Don’t forget their water bottle as well.  Thanks for your support!

BIG ONE AT 2

On Thursday, May 5 we will be holding an earthquake drill. The drill gives us a chance to review the supplies in our earthquake bin and ensuring each staff member knows their important role(s) in case of a real disaster. Teachers will be going over with their classes what the expectations are if it was a real emergency.  Please speak to your child’s teacher if you feel this will bring up any strong emotions for your child.

The district has moved the date of our full Earthquake Drill to October 20th as part of the Great BC ShakeOut.  This is a great reminder to review your own emergency preparedness at home and talk about what you as a family would do if there was a natural disaster.

LOST & FOUND

We have many lost items of clothing and containers including a number of coats and sweaters.  We will be putting our lost & found items outside during drop-off and pick-up on Wednesday, May 11 to Friday, May 13.  Please have a look and claim any items that might belong to your child. Any left-over items will be donated to charity. It is also a good reminder to label your child’s clothing so it is easier for us to return any items. Thank you!
