Item 2 – PAC Executive Openings for 2022/23 School Year Shannon Kaplan

8 meetings a year

Slate for election will be presented at May meeting

Item 3 – JO Staff Parent Liaison update (Shaun S from JO Staff)

  • Post spring break mood
  • Parent-teacher meetings a couple of weeks ago went well in spite of some technical issues
  • Staff discussing whether to keep the Teams meeting format post-COVID. (a straw pool of parents voted in comments- almost all in favour of keeping the virtual format)
  • Report cards to be sent out at the end of next week

Item 4 – Principal Brent Schieman update

  • Learning Assistance Life Skills won the District-wide basketball tournament
  • Leadership group back helping at elementary schools
  • Hear for Peers brought elementary school kids to JO for a workshop on mental health
  • Breakfast Club has started offering breakfast on Fridays from 8-8:25 with a $10,000 grant obtained from the Vancouver Sun by Liz Krieg, Indigenous Support Teacher and support from the cafeteria staff who are renovating a sink and corner of the cafeteria
  • Senior Girls Basketball Team made provincials and came in 12th
  • Girls Wrestling Team made provincials and came in 4th and 1st in their divisions
  • Mountain Bike Team (7 students) will be attending the Provincials on Vancouver Island May 25-27. Trying to keep costs low by camping, but would appreciate if PAC could help support financially
  • Auditorium almost complete. New JO Banners
  • Parent-teacher conferences held
  • Field trips are back- at least the day trips
  • Literacy 12 test taking place April 26-29
  • Numeracy 10 & Literacy 10 taking place in June
  • Indigenous Graduation Requirements- discussion happening about how to best implement, especially for Grades 10 & 11 as they will need it to graduate. Currently thinking of having all English Classes become English First Peoples, as there is a curriculum available with teachers who were able to teach the material, so that it would be a genuine & authentic course, not just to meet the requirement. After that, the School could then determine how to fit a separate class into the curriculum.
  • May 12 Student teachers are hoping to put on an Arts & Music festival in the evening
  • Grad: June 7, 5pm at the Chan Centre
  • Prom: June 23 at the Pan Pacific
  • Students also hoping to hold a Dry Grad, but time is tight, so encouraging them to think of piggy-backing on existing events or other ways of commemorating graduation
  • Enrollment projects- projected 960 students next year, likely to be closer to 930. 15 year projection is 900. Grades are between 150-180 students. We have 330 kids in catchment who are not coming to JO- likely going to private school as JO also gets cross-boundary kids, so those generally even out.

Question: What has happened with the All Nations Room?

Answer: It will happen, but still figuring out the schedule for next year and which rooms will be needed before final allocation is made.
