Minutes Nov 2019

Present:       Sheril Gelmon (PAC Chair), Jo-Ann Gordon (Co-Secretary), Lara Spence (Communications/Social Media), Sheri Wiwchar (Co-Fundraising Coordinator), Damian Wilmann (Principal), Nancy Palejko (Psychology and Spanish teacher; Teacher Liaison), and 11 parents.

The meeting began at 7:00 pm with approval of minutes from October 16 meeting by Sheri Wiwchar and seconded by Lara Spence. Introductions were done by all present.

School Update

– Parent-Teacher Interviews happening

– Online MyEd access for students and parents

– Visits to the school by Janet Fraser, Chair of the School Board and Trustee and Michalee Lee, MLA

– Mon. Nov. 25 – Post Secondary Day – Gr. 11 & 12 – visiting various colleges and universities

– Nov. 27-29 – Joker’s Classic – Girls Basketball

– Dec. 4-6 – Joker’s Classic – Boys Basketball

– Friday Dec. 6 – Superintendent will visit the school and talk with students

– Wed. Dec. 11 – Winter Concert

– Thurs. Dec. 19 – Term 1 formal grades going home and published on MyEd

  1. Teacher Liaison Update – Nancy Palejko

Update to public education

– teachers are bargaining with NDP government for a new  3 year contract (expired June 2019)

– shortage of teachers in BC = 400 unfilled positions

– second lowest salary for teachers in Canada

– petition MLA – attached letter to be sent by parents

– PAC awarded a total of $19,875 to various clubs and teams

– 2018/2019 Gaming report has been filed with the province

– Balances in accounts as follows:

Gaming Fund (government lottery funds with special spending criteria) – $8,044

Consultative Fund (PAC raised money with no restrictions on spending) – $4,657

Legacy Fund (money raised in 100 Yr Anniversary, for legacy projects) – $2,952

School-Held Consultative Account (online donations to PAC) via School Cash Online) – $60

Deadline for ordering is Wednesday November 27; pick up at the school Friday December 13. Every order will also receive a 25% privilege card (valid from January – Oct 31, 2020) to be used at the Purdy’s Factory Store on Kingsway.

  1. Grads 2020 – Ruby Ollivier, Maddi Vaisbord – Anne Alvares, S Birkenhead (sponsor teachers)

– Grad Committee meets generally every 2-3 weeks

– Wed. Dec. 11 – Grad Breakfast at 8:30 am

– Tues. June 2 – Leaving Ceremony

– Fri. June 19 – Prom – Coast Hotel? TBD

– suggestion for the Gr. 11’s to help setting up the Prom

– April – Dry Grad and Grad BBQ – about 220 grads

– no Mystery Buses this year, but will have bouncy castle and games in gym, along with BBQ

– as CPD’s are in the morning there will be no early dismissal, so it will happen after 3:00 pm

– suggestions needed to replace the Mystery Buses

– Fundraising for grad event cost offset:

(a) Krispy Kreme sales during Joker’s Classic

(b) locker, door and gift wrapping – any parents wanting to donate spare wrapping paper, bows, bags, ribbons, please contact Sheril Gelmon (sherilgelmon@gmail.com) or Jo-Ann Gordon (jo-anngordon@hotmail.com)

  1. JO Family Fun Bingo

– Friday Feb. 21 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm in the Cafeteria

– Cost is $10 per person; invite all family + neighbours

– PAC and Mini share the funds raised; Mini bought the equipment to make it possible 6 years ago

– We would love donations of teen and adult suitable prizes and gift cards – contact Lara Spence (lara@laraspence.com) or Sheril Gelmon if you can help, or have ideas…!

– Appreciate donations on the night of shareable baking or appies – we have included food at Bingo in the past

The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 pm. As there is no PAC meeting in December the next one will be held Wednesday, January 22, 2019 at 7pm in the Library.
