{"id":563,"date":"2017-09-30T14:49:01","date_gmt":"2017-09-30T21:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/?page_id=563"},"modified":"2026-08-08T21:29:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-09T04:29:19","slug":"about-vdsf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/about-vdsf\/","title":{"rendered":"About VDSF"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">The <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Vancouver District Science Fair (VDSF) <\/span><\/strong>is the annual showcase of scientific research and innovation from Grades 7 to 12 students in the Vancouver public school district.<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B907QhNpFny\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VDSF participants<\/a> come from a variety of school programs, but all are enthusiastic about science and keen to share their work with a wider audience.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Vancouver District Science Fair:  Students communicating their learning\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MuQiC4wUtFc?start=4&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B-Ng5IaJPxu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dodging<\/a> the start of the COVID lockdown in March 2020, VDSF pivoted to a virtual format for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CKlXhZLB0Du\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cak-HbFvtXn\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>. When in-person fairs resumed in 2023, VDSF moved forward as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CnCkp8JrKqW\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hybrid fair<\/a> instead of returning to <em>status quo<\/em>. Today&#8217;s VDSF participants attend both virtual judging over Microsoft Teams and an in-person fair at <a href=\"https:\/\/langara.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Langara College<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Langara College has generously hosted VDSF on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9yUCB-pTK2\/?img_index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">campus<\/a> since 2013. In between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C4Czs2BOlSY\/?img_index=10\">presenting<\/a> their work to judges from the local scientific community, participants also have the opportunity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B9IeD4LpaJO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meet<\/a> like-minded students, see each other&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DH1_j5PS6NX\/?img_index=1\">projects<\/a>, and attend hands-on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DIFXi26ylOe\/?img_index=1\">breakout sessions<\/a> led by Langara faculty.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Vancouver District Science Fair 2018\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6yR9Tl9qXag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Students gain invaluable skills from conducting their own scientific inquiry but can only build confidence in their live presentation skills through experience. VDSF provides students that opportunity by pairing them with judges who have the expertise to appreciate and challenge their work. The hybrid format allows students to hone their communication skills in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C3zZEUfOqzu\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DISskn3R7dB\/?img_index=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">face-to-face<\/a> settings.<\/p>\n<p>For some students, VDSF is the finale to their science fair journey. For others, VDSF will be a stepping stone to science fairs at the regional (<a href=\"https:\/\/gvrsf.ca\/\">Greater Vancouver<\/a>) and even national levels (<a href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.ca\/science-fairs\/cwsf\/edmonton-2023\/about-cwsf\/\">Canada-Wide Science Fair<\/a>). Either way, VDSF is a positive experience for all participants.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">[<strong>Last updated:<\/strong> August 2026]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>VDSF is the official qualifying round for the <a href=\"https:\/\/gvrsf.ca\/\">Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF)<\/a>.<\/strong> <\/span>If you are a VSB student, you must first attend and place as a finalist at VDSF before you can register for GVRSF.
