This includes online courses (VLN), alternate schools (VASS), and district programs.\u00a0\u00a0\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">NOTE:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">A project can only be registered with<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #3366ff\">ONE school.<\/span><\/strong>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>If the project partners come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vsb.bc.ca\/school-directory-and-map\">different schools within the Vancouver public school district (SD #39)<\/a>, they can decide which VSB school to register under for VDSF.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>If the project partners come from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gvrsf.ca\/students\/registration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different school <strong>districts<\/strong> within the Greater Vancouver region<\/a>, they may opt to represent the non-VSB district and apply directly to GVRSF without going through VDSF.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>In both cases, students should inform their respective schools of the partnership before starting any experiments and notify VDSF via e-mail (include their school&#8217;s VDSF contact) by the end of Semester 1 (January 29).\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>They are a student in <strong>Grades 7 to 12<\/strong> as indicated on their BC Ministry Form 1701 as of September 30, 2026.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>They worked on the project by themselves or with the same partner from <strong>start to completion<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n<li>Their project meets Youth Science Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.public.doctract.com\/doctract\/documentportal\/08DAEF4FCB7D3B432AB676C340C04CF5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong>ethics<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.public.doctract.com\/doctract\/documentportal\/08DAEF4FCB7D3EA5EA990F677525F38F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">safety <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">guidelines<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li>Their project has been <b>nominated <\/b>by an in-school selection process (e.g. school science fair, department consensus, teacher recommendation, etc.) to represent their school at VDSF.<\/li>\r\n<li>They have a <strong>teacher sponsor<\/strong> who is qualified to verify the student and the project&#8217;s eligibility. This person should\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>be a science teacher from the student&#8217;s school\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>have firsthand knowledge of the student&#8217;s project and its history<\/li>\r\n<li>have completed ethics approval training with VDSF (Level 1 or 2)\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>VDSF ethics approval workshops for teachers are offered in October and November.<\/strong> <\/span>Prospective teacher sponsors need to attend one of these by Winter Break (December 18) whether their student&#8217;s project requires ethics approval or not. Involvement from other students is not permitted at any point in the project&#8217;s development.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>A project that was previously worked on by 2 students cannot be registered as a single person project. <\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">This includes situations where 1 student leaves the partnership the project is in between fairs, e.g. VDSF and GVRSF.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>A student may not present <span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><strong>more than one project<\/strong><\/span> at VDSF in the same year.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>A student may not present a project that has already been presented at a previous district or regional science fair.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #333333\">A project may be presented as the continuation of a previous project if there has been <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #333333\">substantial expansion or extension of the original investigation or design process (teacher sponsors will be asked to cite evidence of this before registration).<\/span> If the project is accepted to VDSF, students may only present on the new work completed since the previous fair, though the earlier work may be referenced.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>The project must meet\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.public.doctract.com\/doctract\/documentportal\/08DAEF4FCB7D3EA5EA990F677525F38F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Youth Science Canada safety guidelines<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.public.doctract.com\/doctract\/documentportal\/08DAEF4FCB7D3B432AB676C340C04CF5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">Youth Science Canada ethics guidelines<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, as well as <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/youthscience.public.doctract.com\/doctract\/documentportal\/08DC4433923EEDCBA22FC756A40189A6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Youth Science Canada guidelines on the use of generative artificial intelligence in STEM projects<\/a><\/span><\/strong> (if applicable).<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2 style=\"letter-spacing: 0.8px;text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><strong>REGISTRATION GUIDELINES<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1802 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-1024x582.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-1536x873.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-2048x1164.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-560x318.jpg 560w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-260x148.jpg 260w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2024\/08\/IMG_5699-160x91.jpg 160w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<blockquote>\r\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/student-teacher-info\/register-for-vdsf\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900\">VDSF registration<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0for information on <strong>how\u00a0<\/strong>to navigate the registration process.<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Students should register for VDSF using their <span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>VSB student e-mail<\/strong><\/span>,\u00a0not their personal e-mail.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Students should register according to the<span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong> grade level<\/strong> <\/span>on their BC Ministry Form 1701. If the project partners are from different grade categories (e.g. junior and intermediate), <strong>both<\/strong> partners should register under the higher grade category.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>If a project requires <span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>ethics approval<\/strong><\/span>, students need to submit a formal request (see <span style=\"color: #ff9900\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/student-teacher-info\/ethics\/\"><strong>Ethics Approval<\/strong><\/a><\/span>). Once registration closes, any project without ethics approval will be disqualified.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p>Students may only identify someone as their <span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>teacher<\/strong> <strong>sponsor, parent\/guardian, or project mentor<\/strong><\/span> if they have contacted that person and obtained their informed consent (preferably in writing, for project mentors).\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Misrepresenting<\/strong> <\/span>the nature of a project or anyone involved with the project (e.g. student, teacher sponsor, parent\/guardian, project mentor) by deliberately withholding, fabricating, or altering information during the registration or ethics approval process is a serious offense. Additional projects are waitlisted and accepted if unclaimed spots become available.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<\/blockquote>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<hr \/>\r\n<p>\r\n\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0.8px;text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #666699\"><strong>STUDENT EXPECTATIONS AT VDSF<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1922\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2025\/08\/bonner.sellution.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2025\/08\/bonner.sellution.png 1069w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2025\/08\/bonner.sellution-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2025\/08\/bonner.sellution-1024x553.png 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/vdsf\/files\/2025\/08\/bonner.sellution-768x415.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 381px) 100vw, 381px\" \/><\/p>\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">By submitting the<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff9900\">VDSF project confirmation form<\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">, students are indicating that they are interested and available to attend VDSF.<\/span><\/strong> If not, students should notify their teacher sponsor and the VDSF coordinator right away.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>VDSF participants are responsible for their own preparations. <\/strong><\/span>This includes attending the participant orientation, reading the e-mail instructions, testing their set-up for virtual judging beforehand, and arranging their own transportation to and from Langara.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>VDSF participants are expected to know their judging schedule and be mindful of their judges&#8217; time.<\/strong><\/span> This means standing ready at their display board before judges arrive and keeping to the time limit. Judges are not expected to wait around or return for a make-up round if a participant misses their session.<\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>VDSF participants are expected to attend all of their scheduled judging sessions.<\/strong> <\/span>This ensures that their project is evaluated by the required minimum number of judges. Missing a judging session results in fewer evaluations, which may affect the project&#8217;s overall standing.<strong><span style=\"color: #000080\"><br \/><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>\r\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Both project partners must be present at all judging sessions.<\/span> <\/strong>Judges are directed to look for effective communication from <strong>both <\/strong>project partners. If either partner has or anticipates a schedule conflict due to commitments (e.g. provincial tournaments, school performances), they should notify VDSF as early as possible.
