The Vancouver District Students’ Council
The Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC) is a committee of dedicated student representatives from all 18 secondary schools and 22 alternative programs at the Vancouver School Board. Over the years, VDSC has actively represented students voice and has built interschool connections through various activities. The VDSC’s mandate is to provide student input in the planning and decision-making of the district. It is also an opportunity for students to develop leadership skills, work collaboratively with students from other schools on pertinent educational issues, and to learn about decision making and policy development.
In 1997, student council presidents from across the city came together to form an “All Presidents’ Council”. By 2000, this project became what we now regard as the Vancouver District Students’ Council (VDSC). By 2005, four out of the five standing committees in the Vancouver School Board had VDSC representatives on them, allowing student input on board decisions. In 2012, members of the VDSC took this a step further when they lobbied the Vancouver School Board to add a Student Trustee to the board. In 2013, the first ever Student Trustee in British Columbia was elected.
Since its formation, the VDSC has gone on to create a number of different incredible events and initiatives, including Sister School Switch, Passport to Play, the CANley Cup and VanCity Idol.
