People use it to perform activities such as planning, organizing, strategizing, paying attention to and remembering details, and managing time and space.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/helping-students-develop-executive-function-skills\">Helping Students that Struggle with Executive Functioning<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Self-Regulation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-regulation is another skill set that help children be successful both in and outside the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>Being able to self-regulate means a child is able to remain calm, alert and focused. It often strongly linked to self-control and self-awareness. There have been several interesting studies related to a child\u2019s ability to control their impulses or to \u201cemotionally regulate\u201d themselves. The most famous it the <a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\" href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Yo4WF3cSd9Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marshmallow Experiment<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.05em\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>When a child is experiencing stress, they burn energy. If they burn too much energy, they may become anxious, become sleepy or lose focus.<\/li>\n<li>Children need to learn two things:\n<ul>\n<li>What causes them stress and burns energy?<\/li>\n<li>What activities help them feel calm\u00a0and creates energy?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There are four key practices that [you] can undertake in order to enhance children\u2019s development of self-regulation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>BE A DETECTIVE: Try to figure out your child\u2019s stressors, what helps the child stay calm and alert, what leaves a child hypo- or hyper-aroused?<\/li>\n<li>EXERCISE: For a child who wakes up irritable, exercise that works their deep muscles is very effective.<\/li>\n<li>MINDFULNESS PROGRAMS: By using mindfulness principles we can help children to identify their own arousal states. Try using the car analogy for example my engine is running really fast, really slow or just right\u2026.<\/li>\n<li>PLAY: When play emerges from children\u2019s interests it will engage their focus. It will help them to consider the perspectives of others and figure out what they are thinking.
