Leong<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Topics to Be Studied<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The following units of study are the ones which will appear on the midyear exam.\u00a0 <b>No calculator<\/b> will be allowed for these calculations.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Fractions: <\/i><\/b>review of grade 7 concepts, \u00d7 and \u00f7 fractions, order of operations, word problems<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Percent, Ratio, Rate:<\/i><\/b> relating fractions, decimals, and percents, calculating percents, solving percent problems, GST, PST, discount, ratios, equivalent ratios, solving ratio problems<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Integers:<\/i><\/b> using models to \u00d7 and \u00f7 integers, \u00d7 and \u00f7 integers, order of operations with integers<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The remaining units of study are the ones which will be taught after the midyear exam.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Geometry:<\/i><\/b> sketching, drawing &amp; building views of 3D objects, transformations, tessellations<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Measuring Prisms and Cylinders:<\/i><\/b> review of area, nets, surface area &amp; volume of prisms and cylinders<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Linear equations and graphing:<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>solving equations using models, solving equations using algebra, distributive property, creating a table of values, graphing linear relations<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem:<\/i><\/b> square numbers and area models, squares and square roots, measuring line segments, estimating square roots, Pythagoras\u2019 theorem, applications<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Data Analysis and Probability<\/i><\/b>: choosing and appropriate graph, misrepresenting data, probability<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Resources<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Math Makes Sense 8 textbook<\/li>\n<li>Math Makes Sense 8 Preparation and Practice Book (If student chooses to write in the workbook, the book deposit will not be returned.\u00a0 If the book is returned in \u201cmint\u201d condition, the deposit will be returned at the end of the school year.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Attendance<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Absence(s) due to illness or legitimate reasons must be accompanied with a note signed by a parent\/guardian\/doctor.<\/li>\n<li>On returning to school after an absence, the student is responsible for finding the missed assignment and completing any missed work.<\/li>\n<li>If date of absence is known, please inform the teacher as soon as possible to discuss assignments and deadlines.<\/li>\n<li>Missed tests or assignments due to unauthorized absence(s) (e.g. including family holidays) will receive a mark of zero.\u00a0 There is no assurance that extra work for credit will be provided.<\/li>\n<li>An administrative slip is needed when a student is late to class due to an excusable reason.\u00a0 Inexcusable tardiness\/absences will result in mark deductions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Course Expectations<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completion of all assignments<\/li>\n<li>Class participation<\/li>\n<li>Reading the text and reviewing notes on a daily basis<\/li>\n<li>Seeking help from a friend\/teacher<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Assignments<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Assignments must be completed on time.<\/li>\n<li>Late assignments will be accepted until the following day\u2019s 8:25am (unless another time has been arranged with the teacher).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Quizzes<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Quiz dates will be announced in class so students are aware and have the time to prep accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>The purpose of the quiz is to encourage students to study notes, complete homework assignments, and to discuss problems before the next class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Equipment &amp;
