{"id":47,"date":"2018-12-01T19:07:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-01T19:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/roudt\/?p=47"},"modified":"2018-12-11T03:26:29","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T03:26:29","slug":"what-is-a-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/roudt\/2018\/12\/01\/what-is-a-newspaper\/","title":{"rendered":"What is a Newspaper?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Using an inquiry approach to learning, the students worked together in small groups to make their own discoveries about what a newspaper is. \u00a0They looked at a simple newspaper called <em>West Coast Reader.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There was good discussion between group members, with students noticing that newspapers often have the following features:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>title<\/li>\n<li>date<\/li>\n<li>page numbers<\/li>\n<li>photos<\/li>\n<li>words (with titles being bigger, and stories being smaller)<\/li>\n<li>thin newsprint paper<\/li>\n<li>weather news<\/li>\n<li>sports news<\/li>\n<li>news about shows or movies<\/li>\n<li>comics<\/li>\n<li>news about the community or world<\/li>\n<li>reminders about upcoming events<\/li>\n<li>names of reporters<\/li>\n<li>word search or crossword puzzles or sudoku puzzles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When asked what is the purpose of newspapers during a class discussion, the children&#8217;s responses included:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: square\">\n<li>to tell us what is going on near us<\/li>\n<li>to give us information<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My hope with this special newspaper project is for students to learn the power of communication, and to be personally invested in sharing the written word with their readers.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.&#8221; <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>~ Henry Luce<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using an inquiry approach to learning, the students worked together in small groups to make their own discoveries about what a newspaper is. \u00a0They looked at a simple newspaper called West Coast Reader.
