The Memory Project

We had the privilege of having a World War II Air Force veteran visit our class today.  His name is Jack Purdie and he joined that Air Force when he was 17 years old.  He is 91 years old now.  He began his visit by introducing himself and telling a bit about his story, and then he invited the students to ask him questions. (I have included a list of the questions the students asked below).

1. Why do we have war?
2. What does the base look like?
3. Are you a solider?
4. What was it like to fight in the war?
5. How many people died?
6. Did people go with you to war?                                                                                          7. When did the war start?                                                                                                    8. How did you fight?
9. How did you survive the war?
10. Why did you have to kill other people?
11. Did you start the war?
12. Did you have a friend who died?
13. Did you feel nervous?

Then Mr. Purdie challenged the students to engage in society in positive ways starting with having conversations with others and getting to know people by asking questions. The students found him fascinating and really enjoyed his stories and the questions he asked of them.

Thank you for the visit Mr. Purdie.  It was an honour to meet you.

Remembrance Day Assembly

The Moberly Remembrance Day Assembly will be held in the new gym on November 8, 2012 in the afternoon.  Our class is singing two songs during the assembly.  Please come and see us perform.  A copy of the songs is in your child’s agenda pocket and listed below.  Please have your child practice the songs and help them memorize the words.  Thanks for your support.

Poppy Day Song

Soldiers and sailors and airmen too,

Fought for us across the sea,

Brave and unselfish, strong and true,

Keeping Canada free!

I’ll wear a poppy on Remembrance Day,

To show I’m proud of what they did for me,

“Bless my country”, is the prayer I pray,

Let’s keep Canada free!

Song of Peace

If I could have… one wish come true,

It would be peace for me and you.

Peace in our hearts and peace of mind,

Peace now and ever for all mankind

So may your voi-ces never cease,

So may we sing our song of peace.
