FIRST PEOPLES\u2019 VIRTUAL YOUTH CONFERENCE

\nUnited Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
\nKeynote speaker: Dr. Sheryl Lightfoot
\nDr. Sheryl Lightfoot, from UBC\u2019s First Nations and Indigenous Studies and the Department of Political
\nScience, will give a presentation on the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
\n(UNDRIP). Twenty-five years in the making by United Nations members and Indigenous groups, this
\ndeclaration puts forward the \u201cstandards for the survival, dignity and well-being of the Indigenous
\npeoples of the world.\u201d It declares that Indigenous peoples have the right to be free from discrimination
\nand recognizes Indigenous peoples\u2019 right to self-determination. UNDRIP has been adopted by the
\nProvince of British Columbia, and in December of 2020 Bill C-15 was introduced by the Government
\nof Canada to incorporate UNDRIP into law. It is an ideal time to raise student awareness of Indigenous
\nissues and Indigenous knowledge. The presentation will be followed by a Q & A.<\/p>\n

\nOur interpretations: Indigenous youth respond to the works of Cree artist Kent Monkman.
\nSpeakers: Taylor Henderson, Aramis Hanuse, McKenzie Fong, Col Bak
\nFour students from the Native Youth Program at the Museum of Anthropology will present the short
\nfilms they created responding to four different art works from Cree artist Kent Monkman\u2019s exhibition
\nShame and Prejudice: A Story of Resilience. The presentation will include discussion of why the works
\nwere chosen and the challenges of making short films.<\/p>\n
