Physics Opportunities

Metro Vancouver Physics Circle

The Physics Circle is an outreach program catering to motivated and advanced high school students in physics. UBC Physics professors will give lectures on advanced physics topics, including sharing some of their research. Participating students will be given challenging problems to solve; the students may tackle in groups, solo and/or with the assistance of volunteers. Students may have the opportunity to access UBC Physics laboratories (pending availability) and conduct experiments under the supervision of Physics professors and volunteers, on topics relevant to the session. Pizza and refreshments will be provided at all sessions for every participant to enjoy.

The Applied Science Advancement Program (ASAP) is Geering Up’s re-vamped high school program! Join future leaders and change-makers from across Canada and around the world as you explore cutting-edge technologies and concepts in today’s Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields. Class discussions, lectures and hands-on activities will be guided by university students. Our goal is to empower High School students to solve tomorrow’s problems and give them an opportunity to connect with like-minded peers.

Geering Up Junior Instructor (Volunteer)

Are you a current grade 9, 10, 11, 12, or a university student interested in volunteering with kids this school year? Are you passionate about sharing STEM in a hands-on learning environment? Come join us as we share the wonder of STEM with BC youth!

Phenomenal Physics Summer Camp Volunteer

The Phenomenal Physics Summer Camp is an annual summer camp program run by UBC Department of Physics & Astronomy. Camp participants engage in fun scientific activities designed to encourage thinking and experimenting. In the past, they have experimented with electricity, designed hovercrafts, constructed Martian habitats, conducted chemistry experiments and played with tornado tubes and musical instruments. Our goal is to stimulate the minds of these young scientists, and inspire them to explore science further in the future.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work with teachers, UBC students, and professors in the UBC Department of Physics & Astronomy. You will also gain valuable experience working with a group of kids. By being involved, you will spend time at UBC and visit university laboratories and facilities. This is also a great place to earn volunteer or career preparation hours. Last but not least, you will receive a free summer camp T-shirt!
