{"id":1189,"date":"2013-08-22T19:59:43","date_gmt":"2013-08-23T02:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/mggriffiths\/?page_id=1189"},"modified":"2013-08-22T21:09:19","modified_gmt":"2013-08-23T04:09:19","slug":"elements-of-success","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/mggriffiths\/links-for-parents\/elements-of-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Elements of Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently participated in an online course called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/class.stanford.edu\/courses\/Education\/EDUC115N\/How_to_Learn_Math\/about\" target=\"_blank\">How to Learn Math<\/a>.&#8221; This course was focused on increasing a child&#8217;s chance of becoming a successful learner within the context of the math classroom. However, becoming a successful learner goes beyond math and pervades all aspects of life.<\/p>\n<p>One key element to successful learning is the student&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mindsetonline.com\/whatisit\/themindsets\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">mindset<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Children with a fixed mindset believe that they were born with a certain level of intelligence. This leads to children not trying or not bothering with learning. They believe that it&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t matter how hard they work, they will not be able to do better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Children with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindsetworks.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">growth mindset<\/a> believe that they can do anything with hard work and dedication.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another important element to success in learning was believing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rootsofaction.com\/learning-from-mistakes-helping-children-see-the-good-side-of-getting-things-wrong\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>it&#8217;s okay to make mistakes<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When we make mistakes, our brain grows.<\/p>\n<p>We learn to try again, we learn to persevere, we learn to problem solve\u00a0and we learn to face challenges.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/store.positivediscipline.com\/MISTAKES-ARE-WONDERFUL-OPPORTUNITIES-TO-LEARN_b_34.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mistakes are Wonderful Opportunities to Learn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To listen to Professor Jo Boaler discuss mindset and the potential to grow your brain, please take the time to visit this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/lps.k12.co.us\/mindset\/home\/session-1\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>\u00a0for mindset and this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/lps.k12.co.us\/mindset\/home\/session-2\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>\u00a0for making mistakes.
