– many of our ideas of sea monsters come from molluscs.<\/p>\n

– muscular, used for locomotion<\/u><\/p>\n

– in cephalopods modified into tentacles<\/u><\/p>\n

– contains digestive<\/u> organs, excretory<\/u> organs, and the heart<\/u><\/p>\n

= fleshy outer layer covering visceral mass<\/p>\n

– has mucous glands and nerve endings<\/p>\n

– secretes the shell<\/u><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

– lies between the mantle and the visceral mass<\/p>\n

– contains organs that function in gas exchange between blood and<\/p>\n

– water (gills)<\/p>\n

– air (lung)<\/p>\n

CLASSES OF MOLLUSCS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

1) gastropods <\/u>(stomach-foots)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

= snails, slugs, sea snails, sea slugs<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/u><\/td>\n

– most numerous = 5\/6 of molluscs<\/p>\n

– flat foot<\/p>\n

– shell is one piece, coiled, or absent<\/p>\n

– head has tentacles and eyes on stalks<\/p>\n

– have a radula<\/u><\/p>\n

2) bivalves<\/u> (two-shells)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

= clams, mussels, and oysters<\/p>\n

– have two shells<\/p>\n

– right and left shells hinged dorsally<\/p>\n

– no head, tentacles or radula<\/p>\n

– adapted to live in mud<\/p>\n

– feed by filtering particles from water<\/p>\n

3) cephalopods<\/u><\/p>\n

(head-foots)<\/p>\n

= squids, octopus<\/td>\n

– no shells or else a small internal shell<\/p>\n

– large head and well-developed eyes<\/p>\n

– active predators<\/p>\n

– foot modified into crown of 8 – 10 tentacles with suckers around mouth<\/p>\n

– foot used in locomotion<\/p>\n

– expel water from mantle cavity (jet propulsion).<\/p>\n

– mouth has a horny beak and a radula<\/p>\n

– some squids are largest invertebrates<\/p>\n

– squirt inky substance in defense<\/p>\n

4) chitons<\/u><\/p>\n

– have a radula<\/u> (rasping tongue)<\/p>\n

– eight articulating plates, or valves<\/p>\n

5) nautilus<\/u><\/td>\n– “living fossils,” thought extinct for millions of years, found again in 1952<\/p>\n
