most have soft bodies protected by a hard <u>shell<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; The coelom is mainly present around the heart<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; most have a <strong><u>radula<\/u><\/strong> = rasping tongue<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>has 3 distinct parts<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; muscular, used for <u>locomotion<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; in cephalopods modified into <u>tentacles<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; contains <u>digestive<\/u> organs, <u>excretory<\/u> organs, and the <u>heart<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>= fleshy outer layer covering visceral mass<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; has mucous glands and nerve endings<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; secretes the <u>shell<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; lies between the mantle and the visceral mass<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; contains organs that function in gas exchange between blood and<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; water (gills)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; air (lung)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>CLASSES OF MOLLUSCS<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"167\">1) <u>gastropods <\/u>(stomach-foots)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>= snails, slugs, sea snails, sea slugs<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/td>\n<td width=\"347\">&#8211; most numerous = 5\/6 of molluscs<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; flat foot<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; shell is one piece, coiled, or absent<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; head has tentacles and eyes on stalks<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; have a <u>radula<\/u><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"167\">2) <u>bivalves<\/u> (two-shells)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>= clams, mussels, and oysters<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"347\">&#8211; have two shells<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; right and left shells hinged dorsally<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; no head, tentacles or radula<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; adapted to live in mud<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; feed by filtering particles from water<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"167\">3) <u>cephalopods<\/u><\/p>\n<p>(head-foots)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>= squids, octopus<\/td>\n<td width=\"347\">&#8211; no shells or else a small internal shell<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; large head and well-developed eyes<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; active predators<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; foot modified into crown of 8 &#8211; 10 tentacles with suckers around mouth<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; foot used in locomotion<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; expel water from mantle cavity (jet propulsion).<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; mouth has a horny beak and a radula<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; some squids are largest invertebrates<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; squirt inky substance in defense<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"167\">4) <u>chitons<\/u><\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/td>\n<td width=\"347\">&#8211; have a <u>radula<\/u> (rasping tongue)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
