KERRISDALE HAPPENINGS

It has been wonderful to come back to sunny weather, clear skies and longer days. We hope that your family was able to spend some time together and enjoy the break. The last three months will go by fast so do not forget to take some time to enjoy it!

I would also like to take this opportunity to introduce a few new staff members to Kerrisdale, Yuri Ke and Ayrien Setiaputra are joining our wonderful Super V team. Welcome to Kerrisdale and we are happy to have both of you as part of our wonderful community!

Congratulations to the Senior Girls Basketball team for winning the City Championship! 🏆 It was a hard-fought game against Crosstown Elementary. HUGE thank you to Ms. Hundal, Mr. Mattias and Mr. Bullard for coaching and the families for transporting and cheering on the team. If there is a parent that has a good photo of the team, please send it along to Ms. Steele at ssteele@vsb.bc.ca. Thanks!

Kerrisdale Basketball Jerseys: we are still missing a number of jerseys that have not been handed in. We need them back ASAP as Track & Field is just around the corner. Please check your house and make sure it has been returned. Washed jerseys can be returned to Mme. Isabel classroom. Merci!

Friday April 18 (Good Friday) and Monday April 21 (Easter Monday) are statutory holidays. School will not be in sessions on these dates. Monday, April 28 is our last Professional Development Day. School is not in session for students.

CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT

STEAM in the classroom: this term some students from divisions 8F-9F-10F and 1-2-3 had the opportunity to explore coding and robotics with the district’s loan of Dash Robots and Climate Action Kits. Students appreciated this unique collaborative learning activity. Here’s what students had to say about it:

Addison: “I liked this project because it focuses on climate action. In my current events, I talked about climate change and how interesting it is to me.”

Kelvin: “I get to explore different things on how to make the structure different and adding things such as a speaker or wheels to make it a portable device.”

Ben: “It was fun to connect with other people and communicate.”

STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES

Reminder: Early Dismissal at 2 pm on Wed., April 23 and Thurs., April 24.

Please pick up your child(ren) at 2 pm on both days.

Student Led Conferences are a way for your child(ren) to share their learning with you. These may look different for each class. Your child’s teacher will be contacting you soon about your conferences.

STREAM OF DREAMS PROGRAM

Exciting News: Streams of Dreams Program Coming This Month!

Our school is thrilled to participate in Streams of Dreams, an award-winning environmental education and community art program! This engaging program teaches students and their communities about local watersheds, streams, rivers, and the ocean. It inspires conservation and empowers youth to make positive environmental impacts, all while creating a beautiful community art legacy. Every student at Kerrisdale will paint a fish, which will be installed on the school fence as a legacy project.  It’s science, it’s art, and it’s fun!

Program Dates: Tuesday, April 8 to Friday, April 11
Volunteer Opportunity: We are still in need of parent volunteers to help install the fish on Monday, April 14 (4–6 hours). If you can assist, please fill out this form by April 4, 2025 – https://forms.office.com/r/Gyg3acXebZ.

GARDEN BEDS

Several classes are beginning to plan for outdoor learning opportunities. We are excited to be using our outdoor classroom spaces more as the weather improves. Classes will also start preparing our garden beds so students can learn about plants that are native to BC as well as those that were important to our local First Nations People. Students learn where our food comes from and what we need to do to care for it.

We ask that everyone in our Kerrisdale community respect the plants that are growing and not pick or destroy them. Teachers and students think of these outdoor spaces as an extension of their classrooms and therefore are asking that everyone respects them. If you see someone in our garden beds, please kindly ask them to look and not touch. We really appreciate your help and understanding!

CLASS & GROUP PHOTOS

We are excited to have Edge Imaging returning on Wednesday, May 14 to take class photos as well as sports teams, school clubs and the Grade 7 photos. Every student will receive a complimentary digital class photo. To print the photo or purchase any of the other photos, families will have to pay. More information will be provided closer to the date.

SAFE ARRIVAL

Thank you to families for using our safe arrival system. When your child will be late or away for the day, please call the Safe Arrival line at (604) 713-5159 and press 41 to reach the voicemail system to leave a message. When leaving your message, please speak slowly and clearly as we will be writing all the information down.  The details we require are your child’s full name, their teacher’s name and their division and how long they will be absent for.

If the school has not received a message from you by 9:15 am then we will begin calling parents or guardians on the child’s emergency contact list. Please ensure that the phone numbers you have provided us will reach a person who will answer the phone. If this information changes at any point in the school year, please contact the office.

As this is a voice mail system, please call at any hour as soon as you are aware of the absence or lateness as the system takes calls on a 24-hour basis.

If you child arrives late, please have them come to the office to sign in. They also need to sign out if they are being picked up early. We appreciate your cooperation!
