JO PAC Minutes April 21, 2021

Present: Sheril Gelmon (Chair), Lara Spence (Communications), Wendy Sinclair (Secretary), Sue Bains (Treasurer), Samantha Anderson (DPAC Liaison), Corrine Kinnon (JO Vice Principal), Nancy Palejko (JO Staff Liaison), 21 parents in attendance.

Zoom meeting started at 7pm.

We voted to approve the minutes from the last meeting. Wendy first and Sue seconded. Motion passed.

Principal’s Report: Brent Scheiman

Outdoor classroom: New stones added to the field near the portable. These stones will be staying for the long term.

Did we get the cheques from PAC?  – Yes, two cheques were delivered to the office in February (Sheril & Sue confirmed) (the cheques were found the next day in the pile – there’s a new office accountant who didn’t know to look through the PAC box for the cheques!)

Staffing – the accountant (Kim) is now permanent; new office admin is Peggy Wong.

Quarter Four is coming up next week: Grade eights and nines coming for two classes plus flex time every day.  There is an option for their child to stay the whole day.  It is preferred that student’s go outside to eat lunch.  Grade 10/11/12: Now they have to come in for two days during their flextime.

COVID-19: JO is in the middle in terms of numbers of cases VSB-wide. We haven’t had transmission events that we know of. The mask wearing and hand washing helps. We are doing something right. We have to keep the emphasis on protective gear.

Grad: Information will be sent to Grade 12 families soon. June 23rd is the chosen date. We can have up to 120 students and staff in the auditorium. They will all have their masks on of course.

The school is looking for a videographer for grad  – Shannon Kaplun volunteered to help organize this – she has contacts in the community.

Teach Liaison, Nancy Palejko:

All the classes are moving quickly and Nancy asks that all parents please ensure your child attends as much as possible, and if they do miss class, to please call the school to let the teacher know that they are absent.  There have been times when kids are away for up to 2 weeks and the school is not notified.

Financial Report – Sue Bains:

The balances are exactly the same as the last meeting. Gaming $19,137.17, Consultative: $6,358.97, Legacy $3,732.14.

Cheques were dropped off at school in February, reported Sheril.  (Cheques were found by the JO Office staff April 22!)

Sheril Gelmon: The PAC Treasurer need to apply for the BC Gaming Grant before the end of  June. There is also a DPAC membership that we have to pay for (about $70). And 5 Scholarship cheques to write. We have funds put aside for this.

DPAC Report – Samantha Anderson:

Last week there was a meeting: VSB land, seismic upgrades, whether to sell land, etc. The VSB has agreed to make the plan public.

This month the DPAC general meeting will be tomorrow. And there is one in May too. The links to register for them will be on the JO PAC website.

DPAC Online webinars coming up, also on the PAC website.

The DPAC newsletter always has resources in them.

PAC Team for 2021/22 – Sheril Gelmon, PAC Chair

The final PAC meeting in on May 19, 2021.  This year our Zoom membership was purchased through DPAC, and they have set up Zoom for next year as well.  Without knowing what next year looks like, and that there has been wonderful parent attendance this year, makes us think that having PAC meetings on Zoom is much more convenient for everyone. That said, we have missed meeting in person, we have missed having speakers in attendance, so next year it might be possible to have a combination – some meetings in person, and some on Zoom.  It was suggested that the first meeting next year could take place in the new outdoor classroom.

“This is my last year as PAC Chair, and I am inviting parents to volunteer for the PAC Executive as follows: the Chair position (or co-Chairs), the Secretary position (both are mandatory if we are to get the $15 per kid allocation from BC Gaming Grant – and we need these funds!) – Also there’s a Fundraising volunteer position or two that could use people. See position information here>>  Anyone that wants to help out please email sherilgelmon@gmail.com

Shannon Kaplun has offered to consider the Chair position. Corina Tataru offered to prep taking over Communications in 2022/23 because Lara is departing end of 2022 as daughter graduating. Darnelle Moore (Member at Large) has offered to take on Secretary job.

Meeting ended at 07:46.

The last PAC Meeting of the year is May 19, 2021 at 7pm on Zoom.
