Named for Lord Thomas George Shaughnessy (1835-1923), president of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

The public school portion of Prince of Wales School was renamed Shaughnessy Elementary in 1960 when the secondary students moved to the new Prince of Wales Secondary School.
