GORDON HAPPENINGS

It has been a great month here at Gordon with some amazing learning happening. Thanks to all the families who supported our SOGI Club by participating in our Bake Sale. We made almost a $1000! Our Pink Shirt Day assembly was amazing with a number of students and staff participating in the message that we are accepting of everyone, and Gordon is a safe place no matter who you choose to be. Special “shout-out” to Mr. Nylund, Ms. Burgis and Ms. Sinclair.

Our two Senior Basketball teams and Junior team had a great season. Huge thank you to our coaches, Mr. Patrick, Coach Jann, Coach Jesse and Keion. We could not run these teams without you! We are looking forward to Track and Field after Spring Break.

Our second Written Learning Update (CSL Report Card) will be going home to families on Tuesday, March 12. This report will outline the learning that has happened from the last written learning update to now. To learn more about the new reporting order, please click on the link HERE or visit the VSB website.

It is hard to believe that Spring Break is just around the corner. Spring Break this year is Monday, March 18 to Friday, March 28 with Good Friday being on Friday, March 29 and Easter Monday on Monday, April 1. First day back for students and staff is Tuesday, April 2. If your child will be leaving for holidays before these dates or returning to school later, please contact Ms. Heidi in the office to let her know (haleung@vsb.bc.ca). Thank you!

NOTICE OF RETURN FOR THE 2024-2025 SCHOOL YEAR

In order to organize our school for next year, it is important that we know which students will not be returning to Gordon for the 2024-2025 school year. Please fill out the form for EACH child attending Gordon and submit it ASAP.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this. Should your situation change before the end of the school year, please contact the office as soon as possible with any new information. No child will be transferred out of Gordon until a formal request is made from the new school.

VSB BUDGET

Every year, the Vancouver School Board (VSB) adopts a budget for the upcoming school year. To help inform the Board’s budget considerations, we seek feedback and input from rights-holders, the District’s formal stakeholder groups, members of school communities and the broader Vancouver public.

There a several ways to share feedback and provide input:

Complete the online survey by March 8, 2024.

Written submissions can be sent to the Board via email to (budget@vsb.bc.ca) or mail to:

Attention: Secretary-Treasurer’s Office
1580 West Broadway
Vancouver, B.C. V6J 5K8

You can also share your input directly with Board by making a delegation presentation at a Committee-of-the-Whole meeting (scheduled April 22, 2024). If you would like to make a delegation presentation at this meeting, please review the procedures and complete the request form by 4:30 p.m. on April 17, 2024. A summary of input and feedback about VSB’s 2024-2025 financial plan will be completed. It will be shared with the Board and posted on the District website.

Please visit VSB website for more information.

SAVE THE DATE

Our Grade 7 Leaving Ceremony will be on Wednesday, June 19 at 1:30 pm. We are looking for a group of parents that would like to help with the planning which will start after Spring Break. Please let Ms. Steele know if you are interested in helping.

BOOK DONATION DRIVE

Have you got kids books stored somewhere?  Not using them anymore? Would you like to pass them along?

We have been very grateful for the outpouring of support for this book drive. These are such special gifts, especially the board books. We have decided to extend the drive for one more week. Please drop off your donations to the school library before Friday, March 8. We are looking for gently used ‘books for babies and children up to age 5.  These will go to the School District’s Early Learning Drop in program and be given as gifts to families who need them.

We are co-operating with the Rotary Club of Vancouver Arbutus whose members collect, sort, clean, prepare and deliver the books.    Rotary Volunteers pick up the books weekly.

Many parents cannot afford books.  Through your generosity, children will be able to have their own books for story time at home. It is a precious gift.

STAR CHAINS

As part of our ongoing work with our Gordon’s Circle of Care, we focused on Intellect this month – “I have the power to make decisions.” Every student in the school created a star that indicated what their strengths were. We then strung these stars together and hung them up in our pods. Below are just a few examples.
