GORDON HAPPENINGS
I would like to formally introduce myself as the new Principal here at Gordon. I grew up in Vancouver on the westside and attended both Kerrisdale and Point Grey. I started my career with the VSB in 1995 as a SSA and then moved into teaching in 2001. I am very excited to be at Gordon and already feel at home. The staff and students have been so welcoming and supportive. In these times it is a lot harder for me to connect with you as parents, but I invite you to say “hi” and introduce yourselves outside before or after school during drop-off or pick-up. You will see me walking around the school.
In my previous schools I have done a monthly newsletter and I hope to continue that practice here at Gordon. I am in the process of setting up a blog site on our school website so information can be easily accessible. Stay tuned!
I also have the pleasure of announcing that the school raised $3058 for Covenant House through online donations. Thank you for your support!
MASKS
With the increase in COVID case numbers we are more dedicated than ever to following all the Health & Safety protocols that the VSB and Pacific Coastal Health have put in place. Please continue to send your child to school with a mask and a water bottle. We would appreciate your help with this as the school has been providing a large number of masks to students on a daily basis. Please encourage your child to routinely take their masks home to be washed. Thank you to parents for also wearing a mask on school property and not congregating in large groups when dropping off and picking up your child.
CSL REPORT CARDS
This year, all teachers will be doing Communicating Student Learning or CSL reports using a new online tool. This tool will mean that report cards will be in a standard format and will allow for attendance to be uploaded more easily. If you are not familiar with these report cards, please have a look at the resources below or visit the VSB website to learn more about your child’s CSL report card. Reports go home to families at the end of January in paper form.
KINGERGARTEN REGISTRATION
All children born in 2016 should be registered for Kindergarten now. Priority registration continues through until the end of January. Students who apply within this priority period will be accommodated before late applicants. If you have registered online but not yet brought your documentation to the school for verification, please do so before January 31, 2020. To book an appointment please clicking here.
Beginning January 11, 2020, you can apply for up to three choice programs (this includes French Immersion) through our online application process. To apply you must have completed your child’s Registration at their English Catchment School by the end of January. The application period for Kindergarten Choice Program closes on February 3, 2020 at 4 PM.
If you have not heard back by the end of February, please contact us and we will help you find out about your child’s status.
Please visit the VSB website for more information.
February 1 – February 28 is the period for Cross Boundary Application.
SNOW CLOSURE DAYS
If in the event that we get a large amount of snow, by 6:00 AM, the VSB will post information about snow closures on its’ website at www.vsb.bc.ca and will inform local media stations, including:
- CKNW (980 AM)
- CBC (690 AM, 105.7 FM)
- CJVB (1470 AM)
- CFHG (96.1 FM)
- CKWX (1130 AM)
- BCTV/Global (Cable channel 11)
- CITY TV (Cable channel 13)
Please do not phone local media stations, the VSB or the school to ask if schools are closed. Please check our website or listen to the radio or TV. When all schools are closed, all other programs and worksites are also closed (this includes before and after school care).
This procedure would also apply to any other kind of severe weather event, natural disaster, or other emergency situations where the health and safety of staff and students may be at risk.
RAINY WEATHER
The next few weeks looks like they will be especially cold and rainy. Please continue to send your child to school with appropriate clothing for the weather. We encourage all students to have a change of clothing at school that is labelled in a Ziplock bag. With the current situation with COVID, we will not be phoning home for a change of clothing if students are wet.
