Grade 9 – Digital Tattoo – Ms. Pacheco, Mrs. Montroy

Welcome to the Grade 9 Digital Tattoo page!

So, what is a Digital Tattoo? And what is a tattoo for that matter? And can a tattoo be removed completely?

Here are some pictures to help you think about that:

The Burnaby Public Library has some great information on Digital Tattoos, and defines it as “…your digital identity. Just like a tattoo, your digital reputation is an expression of yourself. It is formed and added to by you and others over time. Your digital tattoo includes things like websites or blogs you’ve created, tweets, blog comments, your account or screen names and everything else you’ve left on the Internet from your online activities.”

Here is an interesting article from CBC News on April 20, 2009:

Candidate’s racy Facebook photos showed “lack of judgement”: B.C. NDP Leader

As well, we will be discussing Facebook privacy settings. The settings in Facebook can be quite complicated and difficult to understand, however it is important that you have your settings set properly to protect yourself.

Facebook: Basic Privacy Settings and Tools

Here is a short video tutorial from Facebook about privacy settings and more:

Watch this video from Ellen (from October 2012). She sometimes goes through the Facebook photos of her audience members before the show then runs them during the show. It looks quite funny, but think about how or if these photos are ones that should be online. What do you think? What sort of impact could these photos have in the future of the people involved? Consider photos you have posted online. Are there some you may think about removing?

We would like you to complete this short survey. Please answer the questions honestly and thoughtfully. We will look at the results later on in the lesson.

We would like you to reflect, as a group, on the following questions (use the handout to record your responses):

1.  When did you use technology the most?

2.  How much time, on the average, did you spend with technology per day?

3.  Did you spend more time using technology during weekdays or during weekends?

4.  What device(s) did you use the most?

5.  What did you mostly use the technology for?

6. What did you learn about your use of technology from your 6 days of tracking?

Check your Digital Tattoo. You can do this by going first to Google and searching your name (remember to put ”  ” around your name). Then, please go to Pipl and so the same. One person per computer. Answer #6 on the handout.

7a. What did you find out about yourself?

7b. Did you find anything that surprised you?

8. Considering the things you learned while keeping track of your online activity last week, from  the discussion today and checking your “digital tattoo”, what tips you would give grade 7 students about technology use?  (you can use the reverse side of this page to add more tips).
