Biology 12 – Digestive System Disorders – Ms. Ronne

Welcome to the class page for Ms. Ronne’s Biology 12 class.

DUE DATE: Wednesday, Feb 10, 2016

Here is a copy of the assignment (in case you need another copy): Biology 12 Digestive System Disorders. Please read this carefully and follow all the instructions.

For this assignment you will be researching a Digestive Disorder and producing an informational pamphlet that answers the questions as outlined on the handout. Publisher (Word) is a good tool to use to create the pamphlet. When using Publisher, type in “Brochure” to get to all the templates for brochures, then choose the one you would like to use. If you need some help learning how to use Publisher, here is a good tutorial from Printaholic.com: How to Make a Brochure in Publisher.

It is also possible to use a Google doc to make a brochure. It’s a little more complicated but may be a good idea if you do not have Publisher on your home computer: How to make a brochure in Google Docs

To print your brochure: There is a way to print your brochure so it is the right way up. When you select “Print”, click on the box that says “Print on both sides”, then from the drop down menu choose “Print on both sides; flip sheets of short edge”. This should work 🙂

You will also be making a short presentation to the class on the digestive disorder you have chosen to research.

You will also be needing to cite all of your sources. For this assignment you will be using the APA Style (as opposed to MLA). You will be using Noodletools, which is the citation generator that we use here at Gladstone. Mrs. Montroy will show you how to set up your personal ID on Noodletools, as well as how to cite your sources and use the Notecards feature. Please place your sources on the back of your brochure (one or two of the back panels).

For the research: It is important to get information from a variety of sources; books, databases and the web. Be VERY careful what sources you choose as we will be looking at the QUALITY. In other words, no blogs or websites selling a particular product. Wikipedia may be used, but ONLY when you are looking into which disorder to choose. It is not to be used as a source for the specific information relating to your topic. Mrs. Montroy has pulled a variety of books off the shelf, but you should also go the the Databases (on Webcat; choose Consumer Health Complete). When searching the web, choose websites that are either linked to a university or hospital, or a government one (such as Health Canada). If you are not sure about the quality/reliability/relevance of a website, please ask Ms. Ronne or Mrs. Montroy.

In addition to citing all of your sources in a References list (which you will print out and hand in separately), you are also required to use In-Text Citations. In-Text Citations are used when either a long or short quotation is taken from the original source, or when an idea/concept is summarized. The Online Writing Lab (OWL) from Purdue University is a great resource to use to help you with this.

Here are the direct links: “In-Text Citations: The Basics”, “In-Text Citations: Author/Authors”

Another good source is the Basics of APA Style Tutorial from the American Psychological Association. Start at the 13th slide called “Citing References In-Text”.

Please be aware that the QUALITY of your sources is very important. Please DO NOT use Wikipedia as a final source (you can use it to get a general idea of the disorder), and be careful about any source not linked to either a University or government agency. Also, no blogs or sites that are selling products (as there may be a high degree of bias). Both Mrs. Montroy and Ms. Ronne will be looking at your sources carefully.
