This course is a continuation, in a more formal manner, of the work begun in elementary school<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Objectives Include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing concepts concretely, pictorially and symbolically.<\/li>\n<li>Developing mathematical communication skills.<\/li>\n<li>Developing basic numeracy skills by encouraging students to perform calculations without a calculator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Course Topics Include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The following units of study are the ones which will appear on the midyear exam. <strong>No calculator<\/strong> will be allowed for these calculations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Fractions:<\/strong><\/em>review of grade 7 concept, \u00d7 and \u00f7 fractions, order of operations, word problems.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Percent, Ratio, Rate:<\/strong><\/em>relating fractions, decimals, and percents, calculating percents, solving percent problems, GST, PST, discount, ratios, equivalent ratios, solving ratio problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Integers:<\/em><\/strong> using models to \u00d7 and \u00f7 integers, \u00d7 and \u00f7 integers, order of operations with integers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The remaining units of study are the ones which will be taught after the midyear exam.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Geometry:<\/strong><\/em>sketching, drawing &amp; building views of 3D objects, transformations, tessellations.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Measuring Prisms and Cylinders:<\/strong><\/em>review of area, nets, surface area &amp; volume of prisms and cylinders.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Linear Equations and Graphing:<\/strong><\/em>solving equations using models, solving equations using algebra, distributive property, creating a table of values, graphing linear relations.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem:<\/em><\/strong>square numbers and area models, squares and square roots, measuring line segments, estimating square roots, Pythagoras\u2019 theorem, applications.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Data Analysis and Probability:<\/strong><\/em> choosing and appropriate graph, misrepresenting data, probability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Textbook: <\/strong>Math Makes Sense 8<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prerequisites: None.
