{"id":24,"date":"2012-11-30T17:50:48","date_gmt":"2012-11-30T17:50:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/dkim\/?page_id=24"},"modified":"2012-11-30T18:11:13","modified_gmt":"2012-11-30T18:11:13","slug":"mathematics-9","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.vsb.bc.ca\/dkim\/mathematics-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Mathematics 9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Prerequisites: <\/strong>Math 8, Math 8 Enriched.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Description:<\/strong><br \/>\nThis course is a continuation, in a more formal manner, of the work begun in grade 8, and will be taken by all grade 9 students except those who have qualified for Mathematics 9 Enriched.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives Include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing concepts concretely, pictorially and symbolically.<\/li>\n<li>Developing mathematical communication skills.<\/li>\n<li>Developing basic numeracy skills by encouraging students to perform calculations without a calculator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Course Topics Include:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe following units of study are the ones which will appear on the midyear exam.\u00a0 In class calculators may be used at the teacher\u2019s discretion.\u00a0 However, there will be <strong>NO<\/strong> calculator use during the midyear exam.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Rational Numbers: <\/strong><\/em>ordering rational numbers in fraction and decimal form, + \u2013 \u00d7 \u00f7 rational numbers in fraction and decimal form, order of operations.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Powers and Exponent Laws:<\/strong><\/em>power, base, exponent, powers of 10 and zero exponent, order of operations with powers, exponent laws.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Polynomials:<\/em><\/strong> modeling polynomials, like and unlike terms, + \u2013 polynomials, \u00d7 \u00f7 a polynomial by a constant, \u00d7 \u00f7 a polynomial by a monomial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The remaining units of study are the ones which will be taught after the midyear exam.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Linear Relation:<\/strong><\/em>writing equations to describe patterns, graphing and recognizing linear relations, using linear relations to estimate values.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Linear Equationsa and Inequalities: <\/strong><\/em>solving equations, graphing and solving linear inequalities.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Square Roots and Surface Area: <\/strong><\/em>square roots of perfect squares and non-perfect squares, surface area of objects made from rectangular prisms, surface area of composite solids.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Similarity and Transformations:<\/em><\/strong>scale diagrams, enlargements and reductions, similar polygons, similar triangles, reflections and line of symmetry, rotations and rotational symmetry, identifying types of symmetry.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Circle Geometry: <\/strong><\/em>properties of tangents, chords, and angles in a circle, using circle properties to solve problems.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Probability and Statistics:<\/strong><\/em>real world analysis of probability by comparing between theoretical and experimental probabilities, data collection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Textbook: <\/strong>Math Makes Sense 9<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prerequisites: Math 8, Math 8 Enriched.
