Army&#8217;s dressed their soldier up in colourful\u00a0uniforms so that everyone knew how were the enemy. \u00a0 It also, hopefully, helped generals have an idea as to where not to fire their South Africa. The traditional scarlet, blue and green uniforms were however retained for full dress and off duty &#8220;walking out dress&#8221; wear. Details of these colourful uniforms varied greatly between regiments and branches of the army.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uniforms_of_the_British_Army#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup> The early use of camouflage in the form of plain khaki reflected the exigencies of <a title=\"Colonial war\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonial_war\">colonial war<\/a> and the freedom allowed\u00a0and taken, by many of the officers who fought it. The adoption of khaki for active service resulted from the development of weapons of greater accuracy range combined with smokeless powder during the late 19th century, making low-visibility on the battlefield a matter of priority.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uniforms_of_the_British_Army#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>&#8221; (Text source en.wikipedia.org\/)<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"knowledge-related_questions_list__arrow \"><\/div>\n<div id=\"nmtbi5\" class=\"_qhf _grf nmiw nmtbi nmt nmtbia \">\n<div class=\"_eHi\">\n<h2 class=\"_rhf\">Who came up with camouflage?<\/h2>\n<div class=\"_rhf\">\n<p>The French painter <b>Lucien<\/b>&#8211;<b>Victor Guirand<\/b> de Sc\u00e9vola,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In September 1914, De Sc\u00e9vola, serving as a second-class gunner, experimentally <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"Camouflage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=Camouflage&amp;item_type=topic\">camouflaged<\/a> a gun emplacement with a painted canvas screen. On 12 February 1915 <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"General Joffre\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=General%20Joffre&amp;item_type=topic\">General Joffre<\/a> established the &#8220;Section de Camouflage&#8221; (English: Camouflage department) at <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"Amiens\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=Amiens&amp;item_type=topic\">Amiens<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Zaloga2011_8-0\" class=\"reference\">[8] <\/sup>By May 1915 the Section de Camouflage put up its first observation tree, an iron lookout post camouflaged with bark and other materials during the <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"Second Battle of Artois\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=Second%20Battle%20of%20Artois&amp;item_type=topic\">Battle of Artois<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Hartcup2008_9-0\" class=\"reference\">[9] <\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\">[10] <\/sup>By the end of 1915, De Sc\u00e9vola became commander of the French Camouflage Corps, employing <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"Cubist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=Cubist&amp;item_type=topic\">cubist<\/a>artists such as <a class=\"info_link\" title=\"Andr\u00e9 Mare\" href=\"http:\/\/www.revolvy.com\/main\/index.php?s=Andr%C3%A9%20Mare&amp;item_type=topic\">Andr\u00e9 Mare<\/a>, a specialist in camouflaging lookout posts.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Forbes104_3-1\" Photo by Paul Nan<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And my FAVORITE type of camo &#8216;Razzle Dazzle&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><b>Dazzle camouflage<\/b>, also known as <b>razzle dazzle<\/b> (US) or <b>dazzle painting<\/b>, was a family of <a title=\"Ship camouflage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ship_camouflage\">ship camouflage<\/a> used extensively in <a title=\"World War I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_I\">World War I<\/a>, and to a lesser extent in <a title=\"World War II\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\">World War II<\/a> and afterwards. Credited to the British <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Marine artist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marine_artist\">marine artist<\/a><a title=\"Norman Wilkinson (artist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Norman_Wilkinson_(artist)\">Norman Wilkinson<\/a>, though with a rejected prior claim by the <a title=\"Zoology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoology\">zoologist<\/a><a title=\"John Graham Kerr\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Graham_Kerr\">John Graham Kerr<\/a>, it consisted of complex patterns of geometric shapes in contrasting colours, interrupting and intersecting each other.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other forms of <a title=\"Camouflage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camouflage\">camouflage<\/a>, the intention of dazzle is not to <a title=\"Crypsis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crypsis\">conceal<\/a> but to make it difficult to estimate a target&#8217;s range, speed, and heading. Norman Wilkinson explained in 1919 that he had intended dazzle more to mislead the enemy about a ship&#8217;s course and so to take up a poor firing position, than actually to cause the enemy to miss
