Duck, Duck, Dinosaur!

On June 7, Kallie George, a children’s author, came to visit Thunderbird School. She also brought enough copies of her book to share with all the students from Division 6, 7, 8 and 9!  All the students have an autographed copy of Duck, Duck, Dinosaur!

THANK YOU to the Bank of Montreal volunteers for reading with our students! This event was made possible due to a partnership with First Book.

A big THANK YOU to Ms. Rudden, our teacher-librarian, for organizing this event!

Ms. Kallie George inspired us with her personal story as a kid who grew up loving books.   She encouraged all of us to write and write some more, and to have fun doing it!

Sports Day!

Thank you to all the families who came to cheer on our students for Sports Day! We had perfect weather and SO much fun!

The biggest THANK YOU goes to Mr. Costea for organizing this annual event.

This year, we had a mythological theme.  We had Team Phoenix (red), Team Unicorn (yellow), Team Ogre (blue) and Team Dragon (blue). Thank you for helping your child creatively dress in their team colours for extra points.  The winning team was…… Team Phoenix this year!

J’aime les fruits!

I love fruit! Isn’t that music to every parent’s ear? Our French lessons on Thursdays with Grandma Anne-Marie have been so much fun! Here is another one of our favourite songs.

Also, here is a slower version of the song about les petits poissons dans l’eau (the little fish in the water).

Will Stroet and the Backyard Band at Thunderbird School!

image

Will Stroet came to Thunderbird School on Monday, April 25 and brought his drummer Todd, and his guitarist Winston. We had a great time hearing songs about dancing, reading, exercising, biking and having fun!  He even had a song about hygiene!

His website willmusic.ca has lyrics for all of his songs, and you can also purchase your favourite songs like En haute en bas (French action song) or the Bike Safety Boogie.

For the song “Just Imagine,” Will taught us sign language for some of the words. Thank you to Will and the Backyard Band for a great way to start a Monday morning!

Every Day is Earth Day!

April 22 is Earth Day, and it is an opportunity for us to reflect on our world and think about how we can act to preserve our beautiful world.

Two wo of the intermediate students shared “Compost Stew” with us, and we talked about how composting was one positive way to reduce waste at home and at school.

Janet Fraser, our vice-chairperson of the Vancouver Board of Education came to attend our Earth Day assembly on April 21.  She is a passionate advocate for public education, and you are welcome to share your concerns with her at Janet.fraser@vsb.bc.ca

Science World Field Trip

image

On April 12, we had a wonderful day at Science World.  We saw a T-Rex skeleton, bees, tarantulas and a model of a dam.  We played with water, balls and a shadow wall. We also attended a Roller Coaster workshop that taught us about force and motion.  All day, we learned actively by doing different things. Can you spy the leaf and stick bugs in the photo? Even getting to Science World was an adventure as we took the Skytrain and Division 9 loved the experience!

Clean Up Your Act!

Ian and Sarah from Dreamrider Theatre came to perform at Thunderbird School on March 31, 2016. Their performance, called ‘Clean Up Your Act,’ taught our students about how to keep Vancouver beautiful.  We learned about the impact of littering, graffiti and vandalism as illustrated by Red Riding Hood, the Big Bad Wolf, Goldilocks and the Bear Family (played by 3 Thunderbird students).

As you are doing Spring Cleaning at home, small appliances can be brought to Thunderbird Community Centre for recycling on April 9, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! It’s 100 Day!

On March 30, we started to do many activities around the number 100. Students were asked to bring a collection of 100 things. The collections are on display downstairs beside the Staffroom. Division 2 helped us blow up 100 balloons as that was what Ms. Yonka and I brought for 100 Day!

We made a snack with 100 pieces and counted them in groups of 10.  We also popped 100 kernels of popcorn and counted the kernels in groups of 5.

We made a picture with 100 dots, a necklace with 100 pieces of cereal, and we also did 100 different stretches and exercises.  Please practice counting at home with your child. A good sense of numbers will help your child’s learning in mathematics.
